if you are going to build a 1st ar, approximately how much would you spend on the different parts....when i look on ar15 i think its a good deal for an upper or lower etc, but in reality i have no idea

Dirt cheap, buying everything brand new, you'll come in right at the $600 mark. But you have to do some shopping and be ready to jump on good deals.

Lower - $100
BCG - $120
LPK - $65
A2 Stock kit - $60
Upper - $250-300

Like I said, do some shopping or trolling on the AR15.com EE and you can get some substantially better deals.

have you ever looked on gunbroker for parts, im sure its hit or miss but any chance one is 'usually' cheaper than the other?

part of my asking is to see if it would be cheaper to buy parts, rather than a bargain bin....financially speaking, its also nice to be able to buy it piece by piece over time...ill probably just be patient

it would be difficult to build a better rifle for cheaper, including taxes and shipping.

If you drag your part buying out over too many years, you might end up with an AR similar to that Cadillac that Johnny Cash built!

Wanting to start building one. Won't be able to do much with it until around Christmas, so time is not of the essence. I'm looking at CMMG uppers and lowers, but know little else.

Full lower or buy parts individually? Gun shows? How much total can I put together one for?

The CMMG bargain bin rifles are 600 now. You probably cant build much cheaper than that.

I have been building mine over several months. The best advice I have is to do a lot of research, know what you want, and look for the deals that show up from time to time and jump on them.

If you plan on customizing the rifle, it would cheaper in the long run to build it piece by piece.

Putting a lower together from a stripped lower and lower parts kit (LPK) is definitely cheaper and more fun than just buying one. It is also very easy to do.

I wound up buying my lower assembled because the cost difference was like $5 at the time. Not normally the case.

Everything is becoming cheaper now.

Having said that, it only takes a few words from President Obama to turn that all around again.

Having said that, I don't think the dems will push for gun control until after the mid-term elections.

Having said that, it only takes some kind of mass-shooting strategy for the usual suspects to demand more gun control.

Having said that...

...the future is uncertain, but prices are dropping.

OK, so where do I start with the lower. Give me a broad game plan.

Buy the cheapest stripped lower you can find. No matter what rollmark/brand is on it, the vast majority are all machined by four major machine shops:

What are some of the dealers that you suggest for buying AR parts? Some of the websites I checked were selling Uppers for $400-$600.

Spikes tactical had lowers for $89 and parts kits for $49 lasat week. I ordered the parts kit and it was of good quality.

Depending on what youre looking at 4-600 may or may not be a good deal on a complete upper.

So do I simply need to match a stripped lower (assembled) with a stripped upper (also assembled), add a mag, stock, grip, and I'm good to go? Anything else?

Most upper receivers come with the forward assist and the dust cover already installed.

>>Upper - $250-300<<

Where??? I realize Log wrote this 2 and a half years ago, and prices change, but I can't find anything less than about twice this.
AgBrad08
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You might be able to get a "model 1 sales" brand upper for that. Other than that, the only idea i have is looking for used.

Oh, but if you look closely he lists the BCG separate. That would bring his price up closer to 400.

Uppers have gone up in price due to a number of factors:

a.) Economy
b.) Metal prices due to demand from China and other countries.
c.) Obongo's election

That being said, prices recently have started to trend back downwards.

Using cheap parts the lowest I could build a freefloated upper for would be around $550. Barrels and handguards could easily add another $300 to that using better parts.
Log

Make the upper $350-400, and it's about right.
