Thanks man! I may try to tinker with it this weekend.

You can actually put multiple front ends on a single device. But what I've found myself doing is a single different front end on different devices to make them feel unique.
I think Daijisho has been my favorite, but currently using Retrohrai and loving it.

I'm still not well-versed enough to explain this from a 30K foot view, but I'll try...!
You can buy very affordable budget linux-based retro handhelds on AliExpress (Anbernic's RG40xxh and RG28xx are what I've purchased in this tier). When you stack the AliExpress deals during their sale periods with high Rakuten cashback offer, you can save even more but I digress...
The 1G1R approach stands for "1 Game 1 Region" and is the practice of streamlining your ROM library. When you download ROMsets, there are typically many duplicates for each title (localized regions, revs, prototypes, betas, etc) so instead of having 5+ roms for each game, you can use DAT files for each platform/ROMset paired with ROM cleanup software to streamline your ROM library automatically by removing the duplicates you don't want vs. doing this manually.
I've had a ton of fun learning how to set up the linux handhelds. Between ROM curation, setting up ports via PortMaster, frontend design, custom bootup screens, adding music to the frontend...you can spend hours tinkering and curating these handhelds.
I think the Odin 3 will be more challenging to figure out because of the custom emulator setups. The linux frontends like KNULLI or MuOS that have preconfigured settings are designed to make that process very easy.
ETA: Did your son get his Odin 3 yet? Curious to hear how he likes it. The pre-order batch my order was in is supposed to begin shipping prep tomorrow, but AYN looks to still be very behind schedule if Reddit's any indicator...

Nice. My Odin 3 finally shipped yesterday so only a few more weeks of waiting!
I managed to get the Banjo Kazooie decomp (lighthouse) running on my anbernic rg40xxh at a smooth 30FPS. Unbelievable this can be done on a device with 1GB ram!

Thanks, I consider my wait shorter than some of the others who just got their shipping labels created after ordering in early July!
FWIW, I ordered the rainbow max on 8/21 and AYN had estimated 9/17 as the target shipping date when in reality it didn't ship until 10/9. So a few weeks delayed.
To your point though they seemed to only be shipping Thors in September. They had a mass shipment of rainbows this past weekend and I saw this morning they started shipping some whites, too
Hope you aren't waiting much longer

Telling myself I don't need this, I don't need this
No wonder they were shipping out O3s like crazy the last few days, probably trying to cut down on cancellations
Im telling myself the O3 portal is too big for my liking
Rex Racer, what colorway O3 did you order?

You can make a custom platform. I called mine Android and dump all my native ports and Google Play Store games in there. Here' what my navigation looks like using Retrohrai. I've got the system selection view then a view when down inside the Android folder.
I'd need to see what video of Russ' you're referring to but he uses ES-DE the most but I think I've seen him using Cocoon more recently. I was between Cocoon and Retrohrai for this latest device but went Retrohrai.

can you help a fellow ag out getting started?
Retriod 6 is about $600 so i want to make sure I fully understand what I need to do to get everything setup correctly.
Mostly retro gaming but interested in how far you can push this thing.

Whoaaaa before we get too far, where are you seeing a Retroid Pocket 6 for that much? That's an insane price. I'm seeing 12GB models for $279 on their website.
For what it's capable of, it's got a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in it so you'll be able to play 99% of the Switch library with no issues (I'm not counting tiny graphical glitches here and there). Something like Tears of the Kingdom can be played but can be fussy and take a lot of tinkering. That's an example of something that I'd put in that 1%. You'll be able to do some lightweight Indie PC gaming as well. OG XBox, PS2, and GameCube will be able to be played upscaled no problem.
For setup, just follow Russ with Retro Game Corp's Retroid Pocket setup guide and you'll be good to go. It's an Android handheld, so it really doesn't matter if it's a Pocket 5 or 6 guide it's essentially the same. Odin 2 and 3 setup guides would work fine too.
