You can actually put multiple front ends on a single device. But what I've found myself doing is a single different front end on different devices to make them feel unique.

I think Daijisho has been my favorite, but currently using Retrohrai and loving it.

Watching frontend videos, and Retrohrai is where I'm leaning for the Odin 3. For recomps, do you know the easiest way to set those up with the front end? I'm assuming I can make a separate "recomps" folder that acts as a selectable platform on the front end.

Also, do you know what front end Russ from RGC is using with that sleek platform selection view he shows in his videos?

Im sure I still have about ~7 weeks to go before I receive it. Gonna feel like forever lol
I also saw AYN is raising the Odin prices again starting 9/1. Glad I got in when I did.

I bought a used Retroid 3+ ealier this year. Its been a lot of fun. I loaded everything I've ever wanted from Atari 2600 up to PSP, PS1, and Dreamcast. It stops there, so PS2 is out of reach for the Retroid 3+ I also bought a custom grip that holds the device, so it is almost perfect in my hands.

The battery on it is pretty bad, probably due to age and the previous owner. i've noticed one bright spot on the screen recently, also. The bright spot doesn't affect any gameplay, and as long as I charge it a little, it works for as long as I'll need it for any single session.

I bought it early this year for $90, and it came with a 250gig micro SD card. Those cards are going from $50-60 now, so I figure the cost of the Retroid was about $30.

I've enjoyed handheld gaming enough that I recently bought a Gamesir controller for my iphone, along with the emulators available from the app store. Now my iphone does everything the Retroid does. I don't have a preference between them, but I'm using about 20 gigs of storage on my phone for roms. I'll pick a few I like and save the rest on HD.

You can make a custom platform. I called mine Android and dump all my native ports and Google Play Store games in there. Here' what my navigation looks like using Retrohrai. I've got the system selection view then a view when down inside the Android folder.

I'd need to see what video of Russ' you're referring to but he uses ES-DE the most but I think I've seen him using Cocoon more recently. I was between Cocoon and Retrohrai for this latest device but went Retrohrai.

Sweet. Your Steam folder… does that jump straight into GameNative when you select that folder?

Yup. You can create "shortcuts" or something like that in Gamenative and it creates tiles just like I have in the Android folder I sent the picture of. I click those and it loads up Gamenative and automatically loads that particular game.

That's sick

I'm very deep in the woods on these handhelds now lol

I bought two RG28XX and one RG40XXh last night on AliExpress' Labor Day sale. The two RG28XX are going to be for white elephant exchanges at Christmas and the RG40XX will be for my sister's Christmas gift. I'm going to have so much fun personalizing the device for her.

It'll be good training before my Odin 3 arrives

My son's Odin 3 is at least in the US now (Chicago)...he's anxious as well.

While I wait for the Odin 3, I've been focusing on building a curated ROM library and have been having a lot of fun with it

I'm taking the 1G1R approach, using the Retool software to create customized DAT files to filter down the ROM collections by platform via RomVault software. I remember I had a new unboxed personal 2TB external hard drive I received through work which has been perfect for this.
I worked through the arcade ROMsets last night... this one was complicated. Without ChatGPT giving me PowerShell code commands, this would have taken me days to figure out!

Have also been finding 90s PC game roms to run via dosbox like Alone in the Dark, Simtown, Lode Runner 2...

Starting to build my sibling a customized Anbernic handheld filled with curated games we grew up with. Such a fun process.

Been hunting Lexar microsd cards on AliExpress. Flash memory prices are insane!

I'm still not well-versed enough to explain this from a 30K foot view, but I'll try...!

You can buy very affordable budget linux-based retro handhelds on AliExpress (Anbernic's RG40xxh and RG28xx are what I've purchased in this tier). When you stack the AliExpress deals during their sale periods with high Rakuten cashback offer, you can save even more but I digress...

The 1G1R approach stands for "1 Game 1 Region" and is the practice of streamlining your ROM library. When you download ROMsets, there are typically many duplicates for each title (localized regions, revs, prototypes, betas, etc) so instead of having 5+ roms for each game, you can use DAT files for each platform/ROMset paired with ROM cleanup software to streamline your ROM library automatically by removing the duplicates you don't want vs. doing this manually.

I've had a ton of fun learning how to set up the linux handhelds. Between ROM curation, setting up ports via PortMaster, frontend design, custom bootup screens, adding music to the frontend...you can spend hours tinkering and curating these handhelds.

I think the Odin 3 will be more challenging to figure out because of the custom emulator setups. The linux frontends like KNULLI or MuOS that have preconfigured settings are designed to make that process very easy.

ETA: Did your son get his Odin 3 yet? Curious to hear how he likes it. The pre-order batch my order was in is supposed to begin shipping prep tomorrow, but AYN looks to still be very behind schedule if Reddit's any indicator...

PeekingDuck sent me an email with some files a few weeks back, but I haven't had time between work and football.

This may sound crazy and incredibly lazy, but is there someone on here I could send my SteamDeck to so they can install all the fun stuff for me? Of course, I would be willing to pay.

Just pre-ordered an Odin 3 Pro 12+256GB.

I can't open it until Christmas, but it probably won't come in much before then anyway, I figure.

For you soon to be Odin 3 owners, I would check out Armada. Russ with Retro Game Corps did a video on it about 2 weeks ago, link to that below. It claims to be a "SteamOS-like Linux for ARM Handhelds". The Odin 3 has some seriously impressive capabilities to play games on Steam. Link to Armada's development page below as well.

it was definitely a long wait but he likes it a lot. It's lighter than either of us expected but the performance and screen are fantastic. Choosing a direction for OS and games is quite the rabbit hole(s).

Nice. My Odin 3 finally shipped yesterday so only a few more weeks of waiting!

I managed to get the Banjo Kazooie decomp (lighthouse) running on my anbernic rg40xxh at a smooth 30FPS. Unbelievable this can be done on a device with 1GB ram!

It's wild how many decompilations are going down all of a sudden. Some of them are sloppy AI assisted but there's still some really cool stuff going on. I've been finding a bunch on r/decomps

The factory has finally shifted back to production of the Odin 3 after a month of producing Thor models. I'm anticipating my Odin 3 to be produced soon - hopefully this week.

Congrats!

Yes! Great time to be alive for portable gaming. I'll check out that subreddit

I saw Anbernic recently start marketing their new 3DS-like handheld with an AI button lol. I can't imagine why they included an ai button besides as a measure to protect them from Nintendo lawsuits towards the 3DS similarity in design.

If the ai button can't vibe code what's even the point

All the recent advances in PS5 emulation recently has me somewhat worried about the future of games publishing though.
In sure it's a small audience who is doing this at this point but my worry is when it becomes more widespread and accessible. It is easier than ever to learn how to successfully emulate.

Thanks, I consider my wait shorter than some of the others who just got their shipping labels created after ordering in early July!

FWIW, I ordered the rainbow max on 8/21 and AYN had estimated 9/17 as the target shipping date when in reality it didn't ship until 10/9. So a few weeks delayed.

To your point though they seemed to only be shipping Thors in September. They had a mass shipment of rainbows this past weekend and I saw this morning they started shipping some whites, too

Hope you aren't waiting much longer

I can't open it until Christmas, anyway. It's a present.

Just got an alert from the Shop app that my shipping label was created, and also got the email from AYN that it shipped. I ordered on September 10, so not bad at all.

No wonder they were shipping out O3s like crazy the last few days, probably trying to cut down on cancellations

Im telling myself the O3 portal is too big for my liking

Handhelds are fun! I've been playing my Steam Deck a good amount recently. I just recently purchased Brotato and the MK Kollection which has kept me occupied.

I really like the nostolgia and fun of MK, especially being able to play all the arcade and console ports. But I gotta say, MK 2 Arcade is a cheating mother *******!!!! Forgot how the AI could simply grab and throw you mid uppercut. Such BS!!!!

It came in today! It's a beautiful looking handheld.

I'm trying to see if the level of mura I'm seeing is within normal range. I notice at 10% brightness the black is slightly washed out in the middle 30-50 percentile range from left to right.
I don't notice anything at 50% brightness.

I'm inclined to say this is fine and I understand AMOLED screens are expected to have some mura.

Can anyone give insights on how they test mura and what you find acceptable vs unacceptable?

And yes, I don't know how else to post pictures on TA outside of giphy, so had to add some sort of sticker to this, so I chose Luigi

Also, I'm planning to create an Android partition and an Armada OS partition on the Odin 3 internal storage (probably 125GB for armada and the rest for Android) and just alternate between the two via the rocknix ABL as needed. I'll mostly be using android but would like the option to play Steam games via Armada if gamenative isn't optimal for whatever game I'm playing.

I know 125gb isnt a lot of space for PC games, so I'll just get a separate MicroSD card for PC games specifically when I'm not using my MicroSD card that has all my ROMs for when playing via Android.
