It was announced as part of Xbox layoffs, that MS would be prioritizing the Fallout brand and here is the latest:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/gaming/bethesda/bethesda-confirms-fallout-3-and-new-vegas-remasters-and-says-fallout-5-is-in-pre-production/ar-AA2890ha

Quote:

"Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now."

Quote:

...confirmation of a new Fallout game from Obsidian and that remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are happening.

Quote:

Included among those projects is a Fallout 76 expansion scheduled for 2027 called Raven Rock, which will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3

Quote:

It also sounds like Fallout 5 is much further out than the Obsidian joint: Bethesda said that game is currently in pre-production, while the majority of the studio is focused on The Elder Scrolls 6.

By my count, that's 2 new standalone Fallout titles, 1 expansion, and 2 re-masters all while confirming that Elder Scrolls 6 is the current focus.

I like this update.

Hah, just posted this on another thread, but agree this is great news. Wonder how long this has all been in the works.

Nothing really new here. We all knew ES6 was their current main project. The Obsidian led remasters were already halfway confirmed in previous shareholder timeline leaks.

I think the only changes were any possible side projects or further Starfield support. Obviously, Microsoft wants them to capitalize on the Fallout show, but I doubt we see FO5 until after 2030. Hell, we're already 15 years post Skyrim with no new Elder Scrolls.

FO4 was released only 4 years after Skyrim, which is crazy to think about. Really, it was FO76 and Starfield that has shat all over ES6, which is completely idiotic.

I don't think the change in IP really matters all that much.

The bigger issue is whether these studios are good enough to actually execute on making outstanding games.

Starfield could have been the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls, but it was marred with bad design decisions and a lot of that is just down to it not being fundamentally any different than the archaic way their games have always played.

Bethesda/Obsidian seem to be studios that just couldn't make the leap beyond 2010 standards. There are so many better developers out there. I'm not convinced that them just focusing on Fallout and Elder Scrolls does anything to address the root of the problem.

I didn't put in post but they did say they were going to continue supporting Starfield. Feels like another FO76 situation, possibly. Game is shipped and it mostly sucks and then over time they just keep chipping away at it until it becomes pretty good. We shall see though. I never played Starfield because everyone hated it.

I'm currently at the very end of FO76 and trying to finish that up this weekend. Turned out to be a pretty good Fallout game for anyone who hasn't played it.

I enjoyed Starfield. I never understood all the hate it got. It was like Fallout but in space to me. I think people had too high expectations for it. I didn't hear about it until almost release day so I was totally blind and had no expectations.

FO76 on the other hand I absolutely hate. In my opinion that is not a fallout game. One of the biggest things I don't like is the live VATS. I understand you can't freeze time in a multiplayer game but Fallout is not a multiplayer game! I've tried to come back to it a couple times but just can't. I think it goes back to the expectations thing again. With Fallout in the title, I was expecting a Fallout experience but I just don't get that with 76.

So, you can play it as single player. You pay the $12 sub to use the private server option and then it's single player. I'm playing on PS Plus so I basically paid for two months to play it through to end so $24.

For me, Bethesda's strength has always been in creating interesting and bespoke open worlds. I understand why Starfield went with procedurally generated environments, but it made a exploration really repetitive really quickly.

It's NOTHING like Fallout.

The entire experience of exploring from where you currently are to where you need to go was removed. It turned into fast travel, loading screen, fast travel, loading screen, fast travel, loading screen...

They were so hell bent on this idea of accurately sized planets, that they removed true exploration from the game. Seeing a node on a map and fast traveling there is NOT exploration.

There's no feeling of true exploration to go from one planet to another one, many light years away. It's just another fast travel and loading screen. Once you enter the system, you then choose another node on the planet and then fast travel with a loading screen.

How does that, in any way, compare to picking up a quest to help a local faction, then setting out across the wasteland and encountering 2-3 quests or dungeons, on your way to the original quest site? In a world that was all handbuilt to explore and find things, mind you. That's what exploration is, to me.

The quest lines I played through in Starfield were well written, especially when compared to FO4 quests, but part of a quest was sandwiched between multiple fast travels and loading screens.

ETA: For those who enjoyed Starfield, all power to you. I'm not trying to disparage the experience. I just simply don't see how it compares to games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout, other than it's a first person RPG where you pick things up.

I played 76 when it first came out. I actually enjoyed it at first, but it was very...lonely. One of the great strengths of the Fallout world has always been th NPC interactions, and with your only real interaction being with holotape recordings it was missing that. I stopped playing after a couple months and never went back.

I feel like I'm a shill for FO76 at this point, but I'm really not. I just never played it until it was fully baked (started playing for first time last month), so I have zero context of how it used to be. Whatever it was like then, it has plenty of NPC interactions now.

While the exploration was not like Fallout, other aspects of the game are. Namely, weak gunplay, bad storytelling, wooden cinematic encounters. It just doesn't feel genuinely compelling or interesting. This stuff was probably just fine back in 2010-2015, but feels completely archaic today.

And I think a lot of that is down to them not really progressing as a studio. You have companies like CDPR that leapfrog them in all aspects of making these sorts of games. Getting engrossed into something like Cyberpunk is a much more compelling and polished experience, imho.

I played near launch and it was pretty rough, since all the story-telling was through expository robots and holotapes. I remember thinking at the time that it felt more like reading someone else's diary than actually experiencing anything first-hand. The intent from Bethesda was that other players would fill the void and create those meaningful interactions, which did not happen--most players tended to ignore each other.

To their credit, they admitted their mistake and started to populate the world with real NPCs with real stories.

100%. PCG worlds was a big misstep, especially given the worlds very quickly felt the same as you encountered the same handful of points of interest on every planet. They would have been better served with a handful of large unique planets than 1000 empty PCG planets.

Also, in a world where No Mans Sky had been out for years by this point, releasing a game where space travel is not contiguous felt archaic.

I played it for a long time after NPC's were introduced and I loved it. The community was awesome and I loved the gameplay. It's every bit of a Fallout game as the rest.

I haven't played in a while, but thought about going back to try out playing as a ghoul.

Yeah, it's a full fledged Fallout game for sure and the campaign story behind it is pretty good with multiple main quest lines that all ultimately tie together. It's every bit as fleshed out as any other FO game and arguably moreso because they've kept adding content to it over the years and still do. Kudos to them for actually sticking with it over the years and pivoting really hard to make it a good game.

And the base building customization almost seems infinite with as much content as there is. Of course, you have to "buy" most of it via points you build up while playing, but still.

I'll get flamed hard for this but I like it better than New Vegas which seems to be everyone's favorite FO. I just played that in last 3 or so years so I have pretty recent context on it. I'm ready to finish it up though and play something different.

I might say it's my favorite overall, as well. I love the location of FO3 the best and the story of NV the best, but 76 is the best all around game. The fact that they are still pumping out content is awesome.

I know it won't happen, but Obsidian made a turn based Fallout like 1/2, I would a very happy man. That said another New Vegas type game would be a pretty awesome consolation prize.

I wonder why Fallout 1 and 2 aren't getting the mobile

Fallout Tactics (turn-based Fallout) was made. I never played it and can't speak to it though.

Regarding New Vegas, why is that most people's favorite Fallout? I enjoyed it but I would actually put it below all of the other titles. It was a drab, desert setting with nothing much to look at. I think FO2 is still my favorite one, but I like old school CRPGs.

I liked Tactics for what it was; in some ways, it played like Commandos, and proper setup for a fight could feel rewarding. It's place in the canon is questionable these days.

New Vegas I think is so well-liked because of the strength of the central plot - a lot of moving parts and ways to succeed or fail. Going back to the West Coast also scratched the nostalgia itch for some folks that grew up with FO1 and FO2.

Yeah. New Vegas is the closest we got to FO1 and 2 which is why it is my favorite of the modern Fallouts. Fallout 2 is my absolute favorite.

I played Tactics and it is a lot of fun. Set in Colorado, but the story was thin-ish and even at the time was treated as a second class citizen. That is why I usually don't bring it up. But I would love it ported to mobile as well. But I don't think that will happen. 1 and 2 have a chance at least.

The Fallout that almost never gets talked about is the Fallout Brotherhood of Steel game on the PS2/Xbox.

Speaking of Bethesda, I completely forgot about the Oblivion Remaster sitting in my queue. I may have to go ahead and start my replay of Oblivion for the first time in over a decade. Unfortunately, the game's difficulty is such ***** It's too easy on normal, but then increasing it just turns everything into a bullet sponge.

New Vegas

New Vegas is basically the same mechanics of FO3 but with some crafting aspects, which I really like, and fantastic quest lines.

But honestly, if you like FO4, you should play both FO3 and FO:NV. They are superior games, though the mechanics will feel a little dated.

What was it about FO4 that you really liked?

Honestly its the mods, playing Far Harbor and Nuka World and all the different settlements I can geek out on.

Nuka World Spaceship Quest was ummm not what I was expecting. Someone at Bethesda had fun making that quest.

All the games have mods, but I'm assuming you mean DLC, because you mentioned both for FO4. Those probably stood out most because the base game's quests were a shell of what the other games had. The main quests and side quests for FO3 and FO:NV are vastly superior to the base game of FO4.

No settlement building in those games, unless there's some mod I don't know about.

Honestly, there's no wrong decision. But the majority of the fanbase considers FO:NV the superior game. Or you can start with FO3 and then follow that up with New Vegas, to play in chronological order.

I didn't know the other Fall Out games had mods. I know using mods is sort of cheating. I enjoy maxing out on ammo and just going full psycho. It's the little things in life. Had thought about playing 76, till I learned it was online only. Not a fan of online play unless it's GTA or Red Dead. All other games I play story line only.

Depends on the system you play. FO4, being a newer game, provides access to mods for consoles through the mod store or whatever. I believe there are also easy ways to add mods directly through Steam. I haven't stayed up to date on modding FO3 or FONV, so don't know if they have an easier way. You will most likely have to use Nexus Mods to download them via a mod loader. A little more involved, if you weren't doing it that way for FO4.

All Bethesda games are moddable. It's one of the, still, great things about Bethesda. They encourage their modding community to make them and give them the tools by which to do so.

I play on Xbox only, use to play on PC. I don't have the space for a PC so it would be a waste to buy one. I have the newest system from Xbox.
