The storage aspect of the service is nothing compared to the content rights.

I'm not too surprised that YTTV has raised prices, because of their unlimited DVR feature. I believe that nearly every program/movie/etc on every channel is being recorded because someone, somewhere has decided that they want to record it.

For example, maybe hard to believe, but I used to know people who recorded Home Shopping Club. So, I believe, considering everyone across the US, everything is being recorded. As new programs are created and new channels are added, storage/delivery costs explode.

I know some recordings expire, because they have for me, but the recording availability duration is pretty long and generous.

I suspect that YTTV may start enforcing their recording availability duration and/or making unlimited DVR as a pay feature.
I would have to assume that YTTV is using deduplication of some sort to avoid storing multiple copies of the same recording.

Yeah, I'm sure. My point was that, with all the "unique" people around the US (recording all of their "unique" interests), YouTube winds up having to record every single thing that is ever shown on any of the channels that they carry.

Some people are undoubtedly recording all the news on all the channels, all the old episodes of MagnumPI, all sports, etc

Also, hadn't thought about the digital rights as pointed out above.

We are probably outliers but we record nothing. I don't understand why people record everything when stuff is essentially on demand in this new world. And I bet you 90% of what is recorded is never watched by people recording it.

Most of what we record is paramount/nickelodeon related. Seems the only streaming service that delays new releases…by like months.

Also depends on the streamer/cable you have and the channel it's on. When we had xfinity recording was more convenient than on demand. With DIRECTV stream it's the opposite. Some channels let you fast forward on demand commercials, some don't, etc.

I tried Sling for a while last year after cancelling Youtube TV. I found it a bit clunky to use. It kept freezing up randomly, and it wasn't the internet because everything else was working fine. I cancelled it after a couple of months and went back to YouTube TV.

Now that sports are being streamed live on peacock/paramount we are going to play with cancelling YTTV and doing different streaming apps- specifically max, netflix, fox nation, paramount+, apple, peacock.

Once ESPN offers their stand alone service or that content on streaming, the last piece will be Fox, which was going to be the appeal of the Venu service.

We have the rabbit ears up to get Fox now and I'm at the point that I'm fine not having ESPN during the non-football months. At this moment we have:

Disney+ and Hulu - just over $4 (Black Friday)
Netflix - $8
Apple TV+ - free (for 3 months)
Paramount+ - free (for 3 months)
Peacock - free (with Internet)
Max - $4 (Black Friday)
Starz - $1 (Black Friday)
Prime - about $13 month, but the shopping is the costlier part
FanDuel/Bally's Sports - $20

Spotify Family - $22

All those streaming services come out to about $50/month, and that is a lot cheaper than any services that involves ESPN. People who don't care about sports are much better off without cable/sat setups.

*I do have a note to myself to cancel several of those services in October so I can pick them up again if they offer a Black Friday deal.

Side note: If my family had to choose only 1 of those to pay for, they would choose Spotify, followed by Netflix.

Yeah fox seems to be a problem. I ordered a cheap $20 antenna via drone delivery but it didn't pick up fox from Aggieland so I have a 1600 mile antenna coming in a few days to try and cover fox exclusive events.

Once we went with Sling this past Fall, I was tired of messing with different antennas so I picked up a MediaSonic Digital Converter Box. While I'm sure I could use it to record live sports, what I used it the most for was setting up the antennae so it was facing the right direction and I could get a read on the signal strength. Once I got that, I could go back to the cheap $20 antenna and find great reception.

Down to Disney+ and Prime Video for now. Been running YTTV during football season only for years

Have an HD Antenna in the attic that I run to a Tablo for DVR. Works really well.

There really needs to be an anti-trust suit against Disney for streaming. They own almost all of it now.

One of the key outcomes from Venu and the subsequent lawsuits is that now content providers, especially Disney, are now more willing to not force the distributors (cable/sat/IPTV) to buy everything, just to have ESPN.

DirecTV and Comcast are both launching Sports or Sports/News bundles that will (almost) get you (most of) your sports.

Promo code price of $50

  • Streamlined channel lineup: Includes popular national sports networks like ESPN, FS1, NFL Network, MLB Network, NBA TV, and NHL Network, along with local channels from ABC, FOX, and NBC in select markets.
  • Future additions: ESPN+ and additional local stations will be included in MySports at no extra cost in the near future.

Comcast is launching a $70 per month "Sports & News TV" streaming bundle featuring live games from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, and NCAA. The package, which marks the latest attempt to build out the sports streaming industry, lets you tune into over 50 news and sports channels, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN, and CNN.

It also comes with a subscription to Peacock,

Until football starts back up, I'm not interested, but I am guessing we are going to see a couple more of these with the price being close to $70 for the month.

"For a limited time". That sports thing will hike up quick I bet.

I heard a while back that ESPN was going to roll
Some streaming service out for all sports and if I could get all my Aggie sports and other college sports, I'd be in and probably drop YTTV. Although I really like the unlimited DVR on it and all the sporting events are recorded whether I want to pause it and skip commercials later or go back and watch something. Wonder if ESPN is still planning that?
