We did some cleaning recently and came across this old game console. I found everything except the red/white A/V cables, but I had spares on that type of cable. I have 2 older TVs with those style of connections. I connected the console to each but was unable to get a signal from the NES to the TV. Yes, I verified the input on the TV was set correctly.

Is this a bad sign? Problem with the console itself, or perhaps bad A/V cable?

It turns on with a steady red light, nothing flashing. I have a red and white cable. I put the white in the yellow connector on the console, but the white one on the TV. I will test it again tomorrow with the white connector to the TV yellow.

Ya I don't think the cables themselves are special. Do you have the rfv coax connection also?

Likely problem here... you ran the composite video (yellow) from the NES into the left channel audio (white) on the tv. A lot of newer TVs have reconfigurable inputs which re-use the same connectors for both component and composite inputs (selectable in the menu). Something else to be aware of.

Technically the composite standard says for mono audio run the audio to the left channel so the red audio out on the NES should go to the white input on the TV. That isn't as important as making sure you run a cable from the yellow video out on the NES to the yellow video in on the TV.

those original models don't age well. It likely won't work without replacing the capacitors and really cleaning the 72pin connector.

and now that we live in the future theres lots of upgrade/repair options to put better power supplies, real RGB output, even new motherboards.

My NES (original) actually works great. My SNES didn't hold up as well and has some issues with some games.

Racing portions of super Mario kart are 100% normal, the start screen not so much.

Bought my boys a nes/snes combo off Amazon for Christmas. We'll see how it goes.
