If this is an accurate report, I'm wondering why the Chinese announced this rather than keeping their capabilities secret as a significant strategic advantage.

Would love the thoughts and insights of those on here much more knowledgeable on this topic than I am (i.e., everyone). What is the practical significance of this, both at the national level and to us poor schmucks who are depending on encryption to protect our financial assets and privacy?

Lost me at "quantum computer". If one existed in a non experimental form and had any capability, we would have heard about it long before this.

So it was just an experiment and mostly fear mongering to point out that groups like NIST are looking for the next standard of encryption that can keep ahead of the evolution on processing power in computers which can crack old standards. Just like they have been for the last 20 years.

Also I'm starting to liken large companies using the term quantum computing to the same as telco's using the term 5G....."It's kind of sort of that, mostly, from the way we look at it in the way that it kind of does the things the name implies...mostly"

Only 64 bit? Thats hardly top of the line encryption where AES 128 or 256 is standard. No telling what they trained this tool on or if it was a true blind encryption break or if they fudged it some amount to help the crack. I trust china posturing like this about as much i trust CNN to be impartial.
