In a stunning event that may redefine the battle for dominance in creating impenetrable security networks, Chinese scientists have cracked a military-strength encryption using a quantum computer. This discovery made by the team from Shanghai University spearheaded by Wang Chao, exposed arising concerns that personal and important data in many sectors such as banking, military and crucial infrastructural activities, can be manipulated. The researchers used an optimized quantum computer from D-Wave Systems for hacking of several standard cryptographic algorithms such as Present, Gift-64, and Rectangle. These algorithms constitute the support of the SPN structure applied in AES and regarded by many as one of the most secure encryption technologies at the present.
If this is an accurate report, I'm wondering why the Chinese announced this rather than keeping their capabilities secret as a significant strategic advantage.

Quantum Shadows: The Encryption Crisis - Modern Diplomacy

Would love the thoughts and insights of those on here much more knowledgeable on this topic than I am (i.e., everyone). What is the practical significance of this, both at the national level and to us poor schmucks who are depending on encryption to protect our financial assets and privacy?

I would have to break down and read it to know for sure, but probably a scare tactic and threat of the future. Overall for a lot of released threats out there that I've seen, they usually end up in the category of just because something can be done in a lab environment doesn't mean it can be reproduced in a plausible scenario for a production environment.

Only 64 bit? Thats hardly top of the line encryption where AES 128 or 256 is standard. No telling what they trained this tool on or if it was a true blind encryption break or if they fudged it some amount to help the crack. I trust china posturing like this about as much i trust CNN to be impartial.

I'm sure that'll be a normal conversation.

Lost me at "quantum computer". If one existed in a non experimental form and had any capability, we would have heard about it long before this.

"Measures have described that they have not directly cracked passcode used in the tested algorithm, this makes the argument that while there is development to passcode cracking point, to nobody is yet achievable to exploit passcodes in a large scale. This subtlety is important; the threat is there but it is not imminent in most cases it is still a looming problem."

So it was just an experiment and mostly fear mongering to point out that groups like NIST are looking for the next standard of encryption that can keep ahead of the evolution on processing power in computers which can crack old standards. Just like they have been for the last 20 years.

Also I'm starting to liken large companies using the term quantum computing to the same as telco's using the term 5G....."It's kind of sort of that, mostly, from the way we look at it in the way that it kind of does the things the name implies...mostly"

If this was truly significant then why would they tell anyone?

Time for quantum entanglement encryption.

Any claims from China are dubious at best. Masterful liars and thieves.

When crypto is wiped out overnight, I'll believe they have functional quantum computing.

Agreed. And if the crypto has been wiped out, your bank account has already been empty for years.
