So, I have a Samsung 55' that I purchased in 2018 or thereabouts. It is a smart TV, but I found that it had problems playing live games on the ESPN app and YouTubeTV app when I cut the cord in 2021. I bought an Amazon Fire Stick, and no problems playing the apps that way.

However, now, I can't log into the ESPN app and they tell me that their app is no longer supported for this Fire Stick? Does that mean I can purchase a new one, and will not have a problem? Or is it all Fire Sticks? This is the only app I am having an issue with on the Fire Stick.

Should just be that model stick. Newer versions should be fine.

Still worked on my fire sticks earlier this week. Though one might be about that age and soon to be bricked so I'll buy more.

This year I "had" to buy a new Fire Stick since my older one suddenly slowed to a crawl old-iPhone-style. Sounds like it's just that time to give your current one the Old Yeller.

A firestick purchased in 2021 should still be supported, i would think. Unless you happened to buy an older model in 2021.

Does your firestick just need a system update?

But also, ESPN says you need Fire OS 5.0 or later for the ESPN app, and the 1st and 2nd gen Firesticks can both be updated to Fire OS 5.0..

It was updated. Don't have that at my fingertips, but the ESPN tech chat asked that question and I looked it up.

I agree that 3 years is not very long for a device to become obsolete. It works with all my other apps. But, I guess I will just have to get a new one if I want to use it to watch the ESPN app.

Maybe a factory reset?

They must have just done something to brick older ones. My oldest one that I mentioned got dreadfully slow and pretty much unusable after responding to this thread. Either that or they are watching us!! Not sure exactly how old it is, but one I bought last year seems to be working.

You should be able to trade in an old firestick for the new 4k max model and get it pretty cheap. They usually let you trade up like 2 times a year.

Cool idea I never heard of. Checking in on it, I see I will get a whopping 3 bucks for it!!!

There is usually a coupon you get to go along with it that makes the new stick much cheaper. Its not the trade in value itself really.

Have you tried clearing the cache?

Quote:

Clear Data and Cache: This will allow the app to reload the info, please go this path: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > ESPN > Clear Data > Clear Cache. After this you can restart your device and click ESPN to see if it is working.
Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the app?

I have a hard time believing a 2021 version Firestick is the issue. I run the ESPN app installed on my TVs but I have 3 Firesticks from 2021 or earlier and never have had an obsolescence issue with any app.
I am not the Six Million Dollar Man, but I might need that surgery. "We have the technology, we can rebuild him!"

Did all that. Didn't help.

Interesting. I just loaded ESPN on a Fire TV Stick 4K bought in August 2021 and it runs just fine. Running Fire OS software version 6.7.0.6

I also installed the ESPN app on my old Fire TV box (pre-Firestick) this afternoon and it worked flawlessly.

What firestick version do you have op? Is it a non 4k version? They do still sell those and they are pretty under powered nowadays.

Yea it might just be time to put that one out to pasture and upgrade to the new 4k max version. It shows on sale for $30 with coupon code FTV4KMAXNEW and if you trade in you can likely get 20% off on top plus the $3 for your trade in. (nvm on the 20% it wont stack but it will apply to another order not using the $30 coupon code)
