I'm looking into getting one of the OctaStream boxes for watching television especially sports and some movies. Does anyone have any experience with these boxes, which version or model name to get, which apps are must haves. Also is there any problem using these devices, seems like a way to cut away from cable.

Don't know anything about this, but after a little googling, how is this different/better than, say, an Nvidia Shield at like half the price? Does it come with IPTV services (probably not legal) already baked in? Seems overpriced and a little scam-y, and only a matter of time before something like that gets shut down.

If you're willing to go the IPTV route, i would get a different device and figure out/set up an IPTV service for yourself. And get a good VPN...

I'm not a real techy guy and was inquiring about this box because employees at Optimim are using them. I don't know exactly what IPTV or Nvidia Shield are, but apparently they are streaming type devices. Maybe you can elaborate somewhat. This cable, satellite and iptv world seem to be evolving and converging, so I'm not sure where legality ends and illegality begins. I have Optimum services and would like to view SEC+ and ESPN+ on my 60" tv screen in my living room instead of my cell phone. This is where all this thought process started. I don't want any trouble from the authorities.

Forget everything i said in my first post.. lol

If you're able to watch ESPN+ on your phone, i assume you already have an account to view that stuff. And if all you want to do is view that content on your TV, you should be able to do that with something as simple as a Fire TV. Download the ESPN app on that and you should be good to go.

Would the Fire Stick work on Smart TVs and also old tvs without the smart tv features?

It will work on any tv with an HDMI input.

And if you bought your 60" TV anytime in the last 5 years, it should be a "Smart" TV.

All the Samsung TVs in our house are 10 years old, but have HDMI inputs.

I guess it's safe to say that using OctaStream and other IPTV boxes out there are legal to purchase but illegal to use to watch sports and movies. I saw them for sale on Amazon, but apparently that fact doesn't make them legal to use.

Correct. Amazon is flooded with all kinds of IP/copyright infringers.

Legality aside, the bigger problem is they are all loaded with malware. any credentials you would use should automatically assumed to be compromised.

Wow. Wasn't aware of that issue.
