So if I trade my 13 pro in for a 16 pro, Apple gives me $340 for the trade in while I still get the remaining 8 months of trade in credits from that 13 pro deal until it expires from AT&T?

Yes. But put in that you want to choose your carrier later, don't get it via ATT through Apple.

When you trade in, you agree to 36 months of credits. If you trade in your phone at 27 months, you lose the remaining credits and it all starts over.
Nooooo. You can take the phone ATT is crediting for, and Apple will give you a good trade in on it if it's not busted, and ATT will still give you the credits on the original one.

This sounds too good to be true. So I can get a brand new iPhone from AT&T that will be paid for via credits on my monthly bill, yet there is no contract and I can walk away at any time? So they give me a $1000 phone credited over 24-36 months of bills and then I can literally walk on day 2 with that phone and sign up with T-Mobile? Because that's a "tie". AT&T is not going to give you a phone and then not require you to use their service.

I'm clearly missing something in the process here.

No. You're staying with ATT as those credits are tied to your service. you cannot change providers unless you forfeit the credits and pay the remaining balance owed on the phone.

Ah ok. Makes sense.

That's what I figured so it's effectively still the old contract rules just not by name. So there is a tie and it's still a lease.

This is why I just buy phones outright up front and keep them a while so I'm not tied to a provider.

Yeah understandable. In my case, AT&T is by far the best option for me in my area so I'm not changing providers regardless. Not to mention I'm grandfathered in with an unlimited plan that I get HBO Max included.

You just don't seem to be good at math.

If you buy it outright, you're paying it all upfront.

If you decide to leave ATT 3 months later, you're just on the hook for 92%. If you don't leave ATT, that number declines every month.

Don't like numbers on the books or whatever, but you're not locked into anything.

Makes sense. I also did this years ago so I'm out of touch on phone plans these days.

Bottom line on the math for me is that it is a $1,000 wash to buy a phone outright and go with Mint vs using AT&T. The former keeps me untethered and the freedom to change plans as needed. We pay $40/month for Mint vs the $120/month we were paying for AT&T.

FWIW there are other cheap cell options that do the free phones as well. We are with xfinity, $64/month all in for two unlimited lines. We got free iPhones with them a little over 2 years ago. Could upgrade now, again for free, but the phones are fine so holding off.

I might look at that but we don't need unlimited plans. Neither of us consume the amount of data on our phones that everyone seems to be doing. We consistently use around 3-5gig per month together so we just buy 10gig plans to cover us.

I don't get how the rest of you need so much data on your phones. WTF are y'all doing? Watching porn!?

Haha got me….

For me, I'll stream football or baseball games if I'm out. And I don't use my phone a whole lot while at work but refuse to get on my work's WiFi. But between camera alerts, emails, etc. I'm sure that data adds up.

We have a WiFi baby monitor and my wife basically just leaves that audio on in the background 24/7. So that alone is a lot of data.

Got my 16 plus yesterday. So far so good - I really like it.

Only issue was pairing my Apple Watch - process would start and fail. Google search said I would have to reset my watch, but tried turning the watch off and back on first, and that solved the problem.

What? The baby monitor? It would when my wife is home. But as I said, she leaves it on in the background 24/7. So every time she leaves the house it's cellular.

Same issue with my wife's Apple Watch. We had to reset it.

I'm a sucker. I caved yesterday and went from an iPhone 14 to iPhone 16 Pro. The battery in my old phone died quick daily. So far it seems to run better and I actually dig the camera button. I took this image this morning at See you at the pole.

FYI
I was able to get the following through Verizon

Trade in iPhone 12Pro for 16Pro. $1,000 trade in value for my old phone. Got the 256 GB which was $1,099.

To get this I was able to stay on my old 5G Play More plan as long as I signed 3 year agreement.

Got the same for my wife. She traded iPhone 13 and got same $1,000 trade-in value and a new 16Pro.

All in all pretty good deal. Basically nothing out of pocket and I wasn't forced into their newer more expensive plans that don't have Disney/ESPN included for free.

Did you talk with a rep to keep your older plan? Or was this available online? Wife is almost exact same scenario and don't wanna to lose her play more plan.

I confirmed with a rep through the Verizon chat before pulling trigger. Took photos of chat as backup. They confirmed the offer I got would not require change in plan. YMMV.

My 14 Pro battery degraded really fast over the last few months and would get stupid hot so I upgraded to the 16 Pro. Looks like I need to retrain my fingers for the camera button rather than long pressing the camera icon on the lock screen.

Has anyone opted into the Apple AI? I don't see the need for it yet, if at all. No need for email or text summaries or whatever improved Siri searching means. My photo library is very well organized so not sure I see benefit in searching or creating AI collages. If anyone has interesting use cases for AI, I'd like to hear though.

The one cool thing I am liking about photo editing in iOS 18.2 is the clean up ability to remove unwanted things from a photo. While Android has had this for years, it is nice that iOS natively now has it. In reality, I have zero to very few photos I would want to print out and display at home or work, so touching up pics on my phone for only my viewing is more than suitable when traces of AI erasing things may look a little wonky.
