You should be fine on any public network, if you are using a VPN, as far as your data encryption. At the end of the day, you are not the low hanging fruit, or a soft target. No one is going to spend their time on you, if you are protected. There would be plenty of other soft targets on the network for them to attack.

EDIT: Also, you could always just use your mobile hotspot.

Yes, that use case is exactly what vpns are for. Public Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi in hotels are routine targets for data theft.

It will help prevent someone who has compromised the wifi router and is intercepting your web traffic from being able to read and analyze your data.

You should always use a trusted vpn in hotels or while on public networks. Nord is a reputable company.

Nord is a good solution for exactly what you're describing, it will protect your web traffic on public networks and high risk networks, like hotel wi-fi.

If you're looking to spoof your location to watch region locked streaming or TV content, it likely isn't going to help you, but it will definitely keep your web traffic encrypted and safe from prying eyes and would-be thieves.

I use nord and its app on my iPhone. Not sure how that interacts with hotspot. I do know that there are more than a few sites I frequent that will not load unless I turn off my vpn. I don't know why. Northern Tool is one of them, and even some financial sites , which I found interesting because those are exactly where I'd want to use it. Lol.

Does anyone have a negative opinion of VPNUnlimited by KeepSolid? I have used them for years and as far as I can tell it seems to be agreat deal for their lifetime subscriptions. I bought a 10 device license from StackSocial and it is enough for all of my computers and Android phones. The only negative comment I have heard was from my brother who had a bad experience with the iOS app crashing

I don't trust any of these third party VPN services, not because they don't encrypt all of your data in transit, but because the endpoint is in a single place that they control. How much do you trust the security policies and controls of the sponsoring company? They have access to all of your traffic.

My recommendation is to run a VPN server of your own on your home network. Lots of consumer grade routers natively support OpenVPN and other easy to set up options now. When you're connected to your home VPN on the road, all your traffic is encrypted back to your own (trusted) network. It also appears to streaming services that you're sitting at home. Main gap with this setup is for folks that need to appear like they're in a totally different region or country... sure commercial providers still play a role there.

Mozilla's VPN uses Mullvad for the backend, but exclusively uses Wireguard as the VPN tech, which is very well regarded. Google search for Mozilla VPN. Mozilla is the company that makes Firefox)

IMO setting these things up on home routers is outside the comfortable knowledge base of most people.

I think anyone interested in using a VPN should use a paid service (not a free one) and to read their privacy policies. The free VPNs are much more likely to scrape and sell your data (how else do they make money?).

At some point everything you do online is based on trust (or lackthereof) . You trust your ISP when you connect at home. You decide whether or not to trust the hotel WiFi or the VPN or whatever.

I have been thinking about getting one, but have some questions. How much does a VPN slow your connection down? I'm basing my experience off the one my company uses, but it seems everything runs slower when I'm logged into it.

And do you guys use the VPN for all of your devices? Would you put an Xbox on your VPN, for example?

The degree to which it slows down traffic depends a lot on which server you choose and the distance from your location. If I choose a server that's a few hundred miles away, in the US, I don't really notice any slowdown in practical terms. On the other hand, if I choose one in the UK so that I can watch something on BBC that is not available to IP addresses outside the UK it can slow down the speed that paged load considerably. The worst-case test for slowness that I have found is to use a server in Sydney Australia.

There are some websites such as banks and Craigslist that won't allow you to connect from a known VPN IP address because they are worried about fraudulent logins. This is certainly true with VPN Unlimited but I don't know for certain that this affects most other VPNs.

It seems like since I got a vpn and using brave ad block etc that it's harder to access texags. I have no problem with other websites. Anyone notice this?
