My family loves The Crew if you are ok with a card game. It uses trick taking strategies in a co-op format. Not a good game for young kids if they aren't able to understand basic strategy.

From our computer overlords:

Some suggestions for unique family board games are:
  • Pandemic: In this cooperative game, players work together to prevent the spread of four deadly diseases. It's a great game for families because it promotes teamwork and strategic thinking.
  • Codenames: In this game, players split into two teams and try to guess secret words based on clues given by their teammates. It's a fun and exciting game that can be enjoyed by players of all ages.
  • Dixit: In this game, players use their creativity and imagination to come up with surreal interpretations of abstract images. It's a great game for encouraging creativity and for getting the whole family involved.
  • The Resistance: In this game, players are divided into two teams and must work together to complete missions. However, there are a few players on each team who are secretly working against them. It's a fun and engaging game that is perfect for families who enjoy a little bit of deception and intrigue.
  • Carcassonne: In this game, players build a medieval landscape by placing tiles and meeples on the board. It's a great game for families because it's easy to learn and offers a lot of replay value.
  • King of Tokyo: In this game, players take on the role of giant monsters battling it out in the streets of Tokyo. It's a fun and fast-paced game that is perfect for families who enjoy a little bit of friendly competition.
  • 7 Wonders: In this game, players are the leaders of ancient civilizations and must develop their cities by collecting resources and building structures. It's a great game for families because it promotes strategic thinking and offers a lot of replay value.
  • The Isle of Cats: In this game, players must rescue as many cats as possible from an island that is about to be flooded. It's a fun and charming game that is perfect for families who love cats and want to help save them.

This would be huge step up in difficulty from Ticket/Catan, but it's a phenomenal game.

For that age range and 4-5 player count, I'd suggest some of the following, which are ordered roughly from simpler to more complex (as I recall). Some don't handle 5 players though, so double check if they need that many.

So Clover
Splendor
Azul
Quacks of Quedlinburg
Quest for El Dorado
Space Base (needs lots of table space for higher player counts)
Pandemic Iberia (or vanilla Pandemic)
7 Wonders
Wingspan
Everdell
The Loop (cooperative)
Lost Ruins of Arnak (needs lots of table space)

I own all of those and quite a few more. If anyone has more specific recommendations let me know.

If you look at https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame and look at individual games, generally for younger kids you'll want to concentrate on games with a weight rating around/under 2.5 for the most part.

My kids have loved playing "Cover Your Assets" - It's a simple card game that is pretty fun. They are 9 & 11 now and still enjoy it. They were playing at age 7.

We play others mentioned on here, but that one is usually there go-to. We also play the card game "5 Crowns" fairly often.

Wingspan is amazing. It takes a couple of plays to get the basics down, but it's a solid game with a fun theme that kids will enjoy. If you want a game where the strategy includes "sticking it to your opponent", this doesn't have that, though.

Haven't seen Splendor mentioned. That's easy to teach and play.

We have enjoyed playing the Jaws board game by Ravensburger. We got our 8yo son the Jurassic Park game made by same group for Christmas and wife and I are looking forward to that!
