Anyone have an opinion on the 2021 vs. 2022 Samsung Frame TV?

About to pull the trigger on a 75" and wonder if the big upgrade (matte finish) is worth it.

Not a direct answer to your question, but this website does a great job of reviewing electronics.

I bought the new version. The matte screen warrants buying the new one if you plan to display artwork. It makes it look like real artwork versus a glossy picture of artwork.

Here's the link to their conclusion on the two:

It's my understanding that these require basically a set top box, is that correct?
Really makes it a pain for minimalistic installs

They are really cool looking

i'll be honest...not sure what 'set top box' means.

It very well could be a pain for minimalistic installs, but i thought the purpose of this tv was to be minimalist.

What they've done is taken the brains and the power supply off the back of the tv and put them in a box that connects with a single cable. That's what makes the tv so thin.

You can hide the box wherever but you have to be able to run that cable all the way to the tv. That box is where all of your hdmi and sound system connect to as well.

I can't remember what the longest cable is they have and it might be different by model year.

I did some research yesterday and understand it's a 16-ft clear wire, but you do need to put the box somewhere.
friend has one I'm going to go check out to see the options. I pretty much need to bury it in the wall behind the TV though.

My in-laws did something like this, not sure if the exact same box but same idea:

Works great.

The OneConnect box on my Frame TV is huge. It'd be difficult to bury in the wall. I have it going down and stored under a buffet with a UPS and other devices shoved under there. Not as elegant as having the cable hidden too, but it's still a nice look

Thanks I was thinking something similar.

Yeah, I have my connect box hidden behind some decorative basket in our entertainment center/buffet.

The UPS and various other plugs are on the ground behind the buffet in an enclosure box

I like our frame tv but hate all the samsung apps that are preloaded. It also drops our wifi connection about twice a week for no reason.

Is the Remote RF?
Or will it need an IR extender if buried?

Buy something like a Roku or Chromecast w/GTV. Well worth it over the stock Samsung experience. Samsung is also data mining like crazy. Out of 60+ devices on my lan, my Frame has the 6th highest number of blocked requests in my pihole and they're all telemetry being sent back. 4 of the top 5 are related to MSFT telemetry and the 2nd highest is Zoom telemetry.

The UI and apps are also much better. I rarely jump into the Samsung side unless I'm changing the picture. I'd have it disconnected from the internet entirely if I didn't have some automations that turned the TV on/off automatically when the doors are unlocked.

I use Roku for everything. Was going to ask if it was a pain to switch over to the art setting. I assume it's just like switching inputs?
Or when you power off does it go into art mode?

Anyone use a universal remote with the frame TV? I have a nice Logitech on my current set-up and would prefer to use just that (runs my Roku also) but not sure how it plays with Frame remote needs for the art.

When you power it off it goes into art mode. I bought a 2021 right before the 2022 models came out because I got a ridiculous deal on it nearly half off with all the extra discounts. If I were buying right now I'd go for the matte finish model. I still love the one we have but I would go for the newer model

as far as the remote is concerned, it should work just fine. there is nothing special about the remote that I can think of. When art mode is on (power off on tv) you can just hit enter so cycle through the different art options. If you want to upload your own art you have to use the samsung smart things app. It might also require some light editing of photos because of the dimensions of the tv

We have a 2022 55 inch. The anti-glare is really good and overall it's a pretty good TV. The invisible cord was the only thing that made me buy it because I have it mounted on a brick wall and I didn't want a hole in it. I have the set box in a bedroom that's behind that brick wall so I have no TV equipment in the brick wall room except the TV itself.

That said, the thing is riddled with bugs. It constantly drops HDMI audio to my receiver and doesn't power it on like its supposed to. It also turns everything on all the time without any input whatsoever. *shrug*

The 22s are new on Woot right now. Got mine on there a few years ago as a refurb and have had no issues

Give it a few weeks. I see new/refurb Frames on there pretty much weekly. I assume they aren't selling well retail if they're being pushed out on woot for a discount

I'm actually about to buy one and have it installed, have been talking with an installer about building out a low voltage box behind it so it'll be totally seamless. Will be connecting a Google Chromecast to it for streaming and tv.

Since the One Connect box also houses the power brick the connecting cable carries voltage and isn't supposed to go through the wall, there is an in wall rated Samsung cable but it apparently fails a lot per the reviews.

I have an a/c return on the same wall as my tv. So I ran mine up the return inside of conduit. There's no insulation or really anything inside that 2ft wide column so I was pretty comfortable with that set up.

Yikes. A building inspector would hate that setup.

Ehh. It gets the job done and the risk is close to zero.

Why isn't the OneConnect cable supposed to go through the wall? I suspect it's low voltage which shouldn't be an issue. Sure, the power cable should be put through the wall, but otherwise it should be no different than routing an HDMI or POE ethernet cable through the wall.
fig96

Because it is the power cable.
Sazerac

I can't confirm if it's carrying high or low voltage.
I do see they do/did make an in-wall rated version. Seems to be OOS everywhere though.

And? POE and low voltage wires are power cables and it isn't an issue putting them through the wall. I can't imagine it's a high voltage power going from the oneconnect up to the tv. The high voltage components are in the one connect box.

If people are concerned about it, stick a piece of conduit in the wall and run the normal oneconnect cable though it.

It also gets terrible reviews and apparently fails a lot, I looked into it.

Not my area of expertise so don't know enough to dig into the electrical details, but in my research it appears to be against code (though there may be ways around it).
