Hello, we're strongly considering getting the Roland Piano package from CostCo for the family for Christmas and are struggling with how to teach our kids how to play. I know how to play, but am hardly a teacher. Also where we live (Alaska) there aren't many teachers, there's only a few in town and there's a long wait list to get them signed up.

I'd expect there to be a ton of material online/youtube but it seems that most of the content are samples built to pull you into their "online training programs". With that said, as an adult I could probably fumble my way through and learn similar to how I did a guitar (for which there is a lot more free content, why so snobby piano?!). My kids are ages 7 & 8 so it'd have to be easy/fun to keep them entertained. I'll for sure be there to supplement and help keep them going however as I learned during COVID, they don't learn from us parents very well.

I appreciate any recommendations before paying fees and committing to a training program. Thanks.

See if you can find someone to teach remotely through Zoom or another medium. It might require a laptop at the piano and another webcam pointed at the hands, but I've done lessons via video conference and they work.

Which Roland were you looking at getting? I'd actually see if you can find a Yamaha or Kawai acoustic piano used. You should be able to find one for cheap even where you are. The electronic ones are OK but you have to spend a lot to get the action of a traditional piano and I rarely recommend learning on one.

True, that may be a good option. I'd be able to extend my search tutors if we went a virtual route like that. During COVID times I'm sure people are capable now.

The Roland is an FP-10. One of my stipulations of getting an electric piano was that it has to have weighted keys and hammer action so it plays like a real piano. It's not the same, however it is close. I've messed with it in the store over the last couple of CostCo trips.

There are some good piano instruction apps designed for iPad. Guides you along with videos and drills. I've used Yousician and have enjoyed it so far.
