I bought a 100 presets for $10 when I first got LR.

3 years later, I create my own. Hubby helped me create a "Brazos County Expo Center" preset to fix the white balance from the bad lighting.
Yeah, I do something similar. I have a buddy that plays in a band and I sometimes shoot photos for them. I have a preset set up for the usual conditions they play in. Then I have a preset for shooting the rare night games at Kyle field. Saves a bunch of time and keystrokes.

I think presets have their place. Some people want their photos to look nice, but don't want to figure out how the software works or how to do it themselves.

For those people, paying for presets probably seems way better than learning it...or at least a good starting point until they decide they do want to learn it.

For anyone that actually wants to spend time in the editing or has specific things they want out of the process, you're obviously going to get more bang for your buck if you just invest time into learning it.

But I think they are 2 different markets - I doubt you have a lot of people buying presets AND wanting to dive way down into the details.
I agree. For someone just getting serious, a basic group of presets for $20-30 is probably a pretty good deal. Later on, they can play around with them and learn the fundamentals of what each slider does and make ones to suit their style.

I'm sure this is an easy question but I needed to set a delay timer (so I could run and join the picture) on my Nikon Z7. I was able to set the specifics such as delay and number of photos. However I couldn't figure out how to actually turn on that mode.

I've enjoyed learning how to take manual pics, but can't figure out the menu system in the Nikon.

What is a good lens that is reasonably priced for starting astrophotography? I have a Nikon d5600

I'm currently looking at the Rokinon 14mm Ultra Wide Lens on Amazon

Thanks!

That is a great lens for doing Milky Way shots and other nighttime scenes. I have the Canon version, and use it and the 24mm f1.4 as well. You just have to get used to doing manual focus in the dark.

Here is one I did in Big Bend a few years ago using that lens.

And this is the time lapse video I put together that frame came out of.

Haha, I have the Canon 24mm 1.4 and 10mm 2.8. that I use on a Canon 60D (crop sensor)

I have not used the 10mm much yet, I got it last fall and then it got too cold for me to go out as much here in Calgary!

The only "vintage" equipment I have left is an old Pentax 35mm film camera. I think it's their "Super Program" model. I haven't used it in many years, not since I went full digital.

Played with Hasselblad and Pentax Medium Format film through 2013. Then I would spend all day in darkroom/laundry room and end up with 2 to 3 maybe worthwhile B/W photo I wouldn't know what to do with.

Decided I'm going digital 100% and sold all film bodies (except an old Canon FTb, Pentax Spotomatic, and a Nikon FG) and gave away darkroom equipment.

No regrets.

Still mess around with old manual focus lenses with adapters.

We had a big storm roll through last night and before the rain hit I got out and took some pictures. This is the best one I got and the best one I've ever gotten!

I storm chase every Spring and I've only gotten a handful of lightning shots on par with this one. Great shot.

Lightning is one of my favorite things to get photos of, but also has been one of the harderst.
Great job!

Hey guys, sorry if this has already been asked on this thread:

My old pirated version of lightroom has stopped working.

I went to see what it would cost to purchase (now that I'm not a broke college student) and realized it is subscription based only now. I hardly ever bust out my camera anymore and would only need to use lightroom a few times a year so I don't want to subscribe. Any recommendations on free or non-subscription based software? Basically just looking for something where I can edit raw files.

Thanks!

As far as free goers, Darktable is great. Used it for a long time. It can get the job done, but it does lack polish and can be janky at times. But its free and once you figure it out its great. Lately i've been using Luminar and its been nice and mostly pain free.

So I'm seeing used d750's on Ebay for ~700 dollars and I'm really tempted to sell my 6D and move over the Nikon. I know from a technical aspect the d750 is a much better camera. Any thoughts from anyone in here?

I want to move to the Sony ecosytem, but its going to be a while before I jump into an A7rIII or better. But I am starting to feel like the low light ability and dynamic range of the 6D is impacting some of my photos.

I absolutely LOVE my D750. Every now and then I think I might should have waited for the Z6/7, but I'm never able to justify it (beyond the Z mount lenses having a lot of potential). I even used it to shoot video for our gender reveal a couple weeks ago.

The question should always be asked "in what way does my current body restrict me?" But I've got zero regrets upgrading.

Anyone used the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 lens?

Looking to upgrade to a nicer landscape lens for my Canon Rebel T2i, and the Sigma is a more reasonable price compared to the Canon lenses on that level. Is it worth the value, or not?

D750 is a significant upgrade. That's a fantastic price on a great camera. The dynamic range especially the ability to retain detail in the shadows will amaze you.

Look at the Tamron lens family. Significantly cheaper than Canon glass and IMO just as good.

I pulled the trigger on it mid week. I felt validated when I got back from storm chasing Friday and had noise in my shadows on 400 ISO. One of the best supercells I've seen in years, but the canon is just missing details in the shadows and its frustrating.

For a T2i You might consider the 10-18mm on Canon. Dirt cheap and actually quite solid.

I use the 17-35mm Tamron and am VERY happy with it. Sold my Canon 17-40m L lens because the Tamron was worlds better.

Apologize if this has already been discussed on the 82 page thread.

I have an old T3 I bought in college for a photography class. Surprisingly, during this quarantine I have been using it often. I have a few questions.

1. For an amateur like me, will I notice much of a difference if I upgrade to another entry level camera like a T7? I assume technology has gotten much better over 10 years.

2. What camera would you recommend for a hobbyist that doesn't want to spend a large chunk of change? I mostly use it to take wildlife photos with my crappy telephoto lens. I try to shoot in RAW and post process so I don't really want a point and shoot. Basically is it better to buy a new entry level body or a used body?

Thanks again for the help.
