I've been reading tons of reviews of other action cameras, particularly the Sony one and the Ion one, but I'm wondering if anyone here has any thoughts on them? Does the Nerdery crowd say that GoPro is still the standard, or have any of the others caught them to where you basically can't go wrong either way? I am interested in getting one, and I don't scuba dive or surf, so really I'll just be using it for capturing family moments and other random stuff but not for anything extreme. Sometimes perhaps attaching it to an ATV at the ranch or snorkeling or snow skiing but like I said, nothing extreme at all.

I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the GoPro and what its user experience is like, so if anyone owns any of the competitors, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Ended up with a gopro. I liked that I was able to find more knock-off camera mounts online for cheap for the gopro. I thought the cameras were comparable and preferred the shape of the Sony, but the gopro had the extra battery you can add. Since I use mine more for time-lapses than anything, the extra battery ended up being the difference for me. Outside of time-lapses, I think it's a toss-up.

In the world of multirotors, the Xiaomi Yi and the Mobius Actioncam are two of the top (and MUCH cheaper) competitors.

I have a GoPro and a Mobius. The Mobius is a great camera, especially for the price, but the accessory options are very slim.

These are interesting options....so neither have a zoom function, correct? Are these viable options for a video camera for kids sporting events and school recitals??

They don't have a zoom function since they are an action cam. Action cams use fish eye lenses so you can easily capture what you are doing without having to use a view finder. The only way to get up close is if you have the GoPro up close to whatever you're filming. I use those selfie sticks.

GoPro wouldn't be good for those events. Best to get an HD Camcorder. MUCH CHEAPER!

all the knockoffs are serviceable but def downgrades from GoPro

Just got a GoPro. Looked at some of the others, but they were highly hit and miss. Looking forward to using it next week hiking and river rafting.
