Pretty much. It was fun at first, but then I realized that to really play the game you had to bug friends or pay money. The good stuff costs donuts, not gold. Donuts you get one a day if you don't buy/bug friends
It's freemium, but I wouldn't say it's a bug your friends kind of game. Adding friends DOES let you increase levels faster but it never bugs anyone outside of the game. There's a section of Reddit dedicated to the game (r/tappedout) where each month they start a friend request thread. That's how I gained most of my friends, and I've already maxed out since downloading the game in August.
I usually only play during the special events, but feel free to add me: agu*******.

yes and its usually the towns that are max level with lots of land and decorations

so whats the secret to this game to make it go faster? Seems like the best thing to do is set up tasks that take a long time and check on it daily.
But in between tasks, there isn't much to do...

The secret is to pay $$.
Which is why I'm not progressing very quickly.
The 1 hour jobs make more experience and $$ per unit time than the other jobs. Of course, the 1 min or 45 second jobs make more than the 1 hour.
So, look at the rates of each type of job, and proceed from there.

yeah, I have noticed that. If Im willing to look a this every hour, I can make more then if I look at it once a day.

Eh, just check it in the morning, at lunch, and before you go to sleep and time the jobs accordingly.
