Song pausing issue on flash drive

I copied 6+ hours of music from iTunes to a 16gb flash drive, by dragging and dropping. I can plug it into my car and play the songs thru the audio system. 95% of the music was purchased on iTunes. Almost all of it works great.

The problem is with about 20 kid songs, all Sesame Street songs from 3 different albums. The songs play for about 10 seconds, then start pausing. The pause length gradually increased from 2 seconds to 20 seconds. Between pauses, about 2 seconds of song plays. It isn't skipping, it is pausing.

I've overwritten to see if it was a copy error, but it didn't help.

Any ideas?

That's pretty bizarre.

What file format is the Sesame Street stuff? MP3? WAV? Something else?

First thing I'd try is a different USB drive. The one you are using may be near the end of its life.

Next I'd try to re-rip the Sesame Street stuff. Use a most common format like MP3 192 kbps. Then copy them again to the USB drive.

Does this flash drive play fine on other devices? If so it could be that the car stereo doesn't like those specific files.

You mentioned about 95% were iTunes purchased. Were the other songs ripped from a CD or otherwise obtained?

I've had mp3s in the past do the same thing. They either paused, skipped, or played a weird noise as some sort of copy protection mechanism.

Bingo. These Sesame Street albums were some of the first iTunes items I bought for my son, born in 2008. Apparently I bought these before iTunes went DRM-free in 2009. I deleted one album from my iTunes account and downloaded a new copy from iTunes. It works great.
