How long do you want to ignore this user?
By request, some tips on starting out:

My best advice is live by the online maps. http://dayzdb.com/map is the best I've found.

Other important tips:
- How do you know how far zombies can see/hear you? While this tends to change from patch to patch (as it is fine tuned), my basic rule of thumb is to consider each line (beside your ear/eye on the right side of the HUD) is approximately 25 meters. So, if you have 3 bars next to the ear and 1 next to the eye, zombies can hear you approx 75 m's away and see you approx 25m away.
NOTE: Sight is based on line-of-sight... If the zombie is not facing you, he is MUCH less aware of your presence, but he can still hear you.

- When you're looking for a gun early on, stick to deer stands (there are loads in the south-west portion of the map). Also, they will constantly re-spawn gear if they're empty, so it's usually best to take the crap you don't need and dump it on the ground elsewhere. This will allow new loot to spawn.

- When you're looking for food/tools/etc, look for high yield loot spots. Theese are typically large 3 story barns, long animal stables, or 1 story log cabins.

- Stay away from towns/cities until you're in a group AND properly armed. That being said, the Enfeld is the best 1-hit-kill weapon early on and they appear quite frequently. Find this and some ammo, and you can defend yourself quite well.

-NEVER corner yourself. You can always run away from zeds, but if you're cornered you're a dead man.

-Zeds always glitch inside doorways- they drop to a slow walk. Use this to your advantage. Find a building that has an entrance and an exit, and make them chase you through it. Once they drop to a walk, sprint out the other side and they won't follow.

---------------------------------------------
*How should I play when I die and respawn?*

Here's my personal strategy. Use it if you like.

-Spawn in the south-west corner of the map, west of Kamenka (keep spawning until I'm here)

-(This is optional) I loot the west-most corner of Kamenka. Near the coast on the west side, there is a log cabin with decent goods. Next I walk across the street to a gate. On the other side of the gate is a porta-potty (where I've found countless 1911's) and a small shed. Once these have been looted, I crawl back over the fence into the field, where I head north to the north-west corner of the town. This has another log cabin and a small shed.
*NOTE: if at any point there are too many zeds or ANY players at all, bail. It's not worth dying.

-Next, I hit all 3 deer stands between Kamenka and Pavlovo.

-Next, I hit the 3 deer stands south-west of Bor.
* I will run in a triangle between these 3 stands until I find a decent weapon. Usually end up with an AKM before I continue on.

-Next, if I'm hungry/thirsty, I will usually hit the barn that is south-west of those 3 deer stands near Bor. It's actually directly in between Bor and Kamenka if you look on a map.

-By this point, I try and meet up with a group or just explore places I've never been.
*Castles are awesome to check out and there's one a few clicks north east of Bor (called Zub), just south of Vshnoye.
*On the other hand, if you want to make it to the NW airfield, hug the far west side of the map (in the forests) and travel north under the cover of the trees.

Anyway, I hope this helps any new starters.

Arma2 is best described as a hardcore military simulator. There are HUUUUGE levels (I think some have up to 7 full sized cities in them), maps & compasses, and more weapons than you could know what to do with.

The awesome thing is, somebody tool all these hardcore elements and made a Apocalyptic/zombie game.

You start with almost no supplies & limited ammo, and scour these giant maps for goods and weapons.

The catch is there are upwards of 500 zombies around the map at any given time, plus 50 real human players that just might put a bullet in your head for the fun of it.

This mod is like a mix of STALKER, Fallout, and Left4Dead. You need food/water/ammo, etc. You start with a pistol and some ammo and that's it. No map, no backpack of goodies. You scrounge for everything. You see a survivor? He just might kill you to take your stuff. Then you start all the way over... no "continue". Here's one BADASS story:

http://kotaku.com/5908753/this-might-be-the-greatest-zombie-game-ever-made

"I've been playing since around 1.2, and it really is something else. I have so many crazy stories and experiences from my travels in Chernarus I almost feel like writing a book.
Once, I logged on in the middle of the night. During my previous sessions I had been making my way through the countryside to what I was told was a town ripe for the picking, travelling with a friend who was now fast asleep. I decide to take a shortcut through a small village, which turned out to be a terrible decision - it was full of zombies.

So there I was, being chased along the road by a dozen zombies for what must've been half an hour, when I see a flare in the distance. It looks like it's on the roof of a building, but it's hard to tell from this distance. I stop running for a second to announce that I'm in need of help, during which time I'm struck in the face and start bleeding. Almost immediately I get a reply - "No problem, come on over". Slowly losing blood, I make my way over and find that it is indeed a building (and a pretty big one, at that). I climb a few flights of stairs, but see no entrance to the roof. Frantically searching, I hear a moan. They're catching up. Suddenly, I hear the flick of lighter, followed by a blinding red light - the guy drops a flare down, revealing the ladder that was hiding behind a stack of crates. I'm struck once again while I'm putting away my mostly-empty revolver. My vision darkens as I climb, gunshots echoing as my newfound companion covers my escape.

The gunshots stop as I finally reach the top. I'm safe. He points me towards a pile of ammo and we chat for a bit while he gives me a transfusion. In the first downtime I've had in quite some time, I realize how incredibly hungry and thirsty I am. I ask if he has anything to eat, to which he replies with a laugh, "You too, eh?"

A scream echoes in the distance. Blam. Blamblam. Another scream - no shots this time, though. I look toward the horizon, deeper into the city where I see a figure basking in the faint light of a distant flare. It's another survivor, and it looks like he's in trouble. Without hesitation, my savior whips out he rifle and, after adjusting his zero, takes aim and fires. The shots hit and the zombie goes down, as expected. What we didn't expect, though, was the massive horde that proceeded to sprint through the light towards us. ****.

We decide that it'd be a waste of resources to try and take them out from all the way over there, so we wait for them to get closer. We manage to pick off a few before they round the corner of the courtyard and escape our line of sight, which uses up the majority of our remaining ammunition. Their cries now louder than ever, we figure they're probably in the building. "We fight to the end!", he says. No disagreements here. While waiting for death to shamble up the stairs, we reminisce about how we first met - oh, it seems like only yesterday! We expend the rest of our ammo on the first few to climb the ladder, though there are many still filing up the stairs.

We back as far away from the entrance as we can and wait. Guns as empty as our stomachs (and my veins), we watch as the first zombie steps floor on the roof. The chat was unusually dead, so it wasn't hard to see the message in my peripheral vision - "Goodbye, battle-brother. We made a hell of a team." I turn my head as he takes a single step and leaps off the edge.

The rest, well, you can probably figure it out."

Awesome Sellis. I'm really ready for a group to play with.

Last night (night in real life = night in game), found my way into a large city (Elektro?) and saw some lights in the distance. Ninja'd my way over to them (around zeds) and found an abandoned fire station. Climbed to the roof for a better view of where I was, when I heard something behind me. Turned around to see another human player had followed me up onto the roof. "Hello!" says I, happy to see another human face... and then I noticed his appearance. He looked like an insurgent from some desert country... bandada around the face/desert camo/AK slung over his shoulder. He was a "bandit", the term given to players who kill and rob other players.

In an instant, my "Hello" was rewarded with a barrage of pistol fire, but that didn't kill me... falling off the roof of that 3 story building is what killed me. The bullet impact had actually caused me to stagger backwards, straight off the edge. For a moment I lie there, staring up at the roof I had fallen off of, just long enough to see the bandit peek over and stare down at me. Then it went black.

So, if it follows real time, what happens when you're not playing? Your player just disapears until you log back on or what?

Sounds like it to me. Since the game would have a dedicated server, I imagine other people are hopping in and out as they please. If you aren't playing, others will continue to get items and explore, fight, or set up camps.

My question: when you come back in, where do you spawn? Same place you left? Or some safe place nearby?

It's an alpha mod, so these are things they are still hashing out, but you can save and go offline. I think you start at a 'safe' spawn point when you restart, but I haven't played enough to warrant saving and continuing on the same server.

I am trying to setup the server, but their web host / site is down at the moment.

Well it looks like we won't be hosting our DayZ server at the moment.

I just wanted to have something we could fire up, kick around in and then close down when not in use. The server hardware requirements are huge, but 2TB of data traffic and they want to RDP into my box for priority setup, just isn't going to happen.

And they have to issue an instance ID / Mission number for their server files to work, so we can't even go rogue.

And then this requirements seal the deal:

quote:
BEWARE - The same restrictions apply to Non-Dev run servers!
- IT MAY NEVER BE PASSWORDED

As I would like to be able to lock it down for us from time to time.

I understand they don't want people kicking Bandits and they want as close to 50 person open world environment..

Here's how it works:

The game time and real life time are on a 1:1 scale. So sunset in real life (as it appears in Virginia, where the servers are hosted) will result in sunset in-game.

As you guessed, when you log out your character disappears. When you log back in, you log in at the exact same spot you left it, only with new environment. Zombies are not in the same locations in every server, just like human players are not in the same place on every server.

This is a double edged sword. On the one hand, you might be able to save yourself by quickly logging out when you find yourself on the dinner menu for a massive zombie horde. You could then log back into a new server safely. On the other hand, you might find a quiet hole-in-the-wall spot to call it a night. Then a few hours later when you log back in, the area might be swarming with the undead.

Also, as it is an alpha mod, there are some strange glitches and settings that players are lobbying to have changed. One is the fact that your water/food meter continues to drain even while you're logged out. What this means is once you log back in a day or 2 later, you are moments from death unless you quickly eat/drink something.

So this game is cool and all, but could they have picked a more frustrating game engine / user interface to work with? There's gotta be something better than Arma2 for this. I feel like I'm pulling my teeth out trying to use the bag/equipment system in this game.

Well I finally figured out how the bag / equipment system works in this game. Its simple for the most part, but definitely not intuitive. Had a good run going till someone shot me in the back when I was sifting through stuff at some barracks. Jackass said I sniped at him so he shot me (totally untrue).

@Troll - yea the backpack interface is difficult at best. The best way to describe it is there are 3 colums. The first column (far left) is only numbers, the second (middle) is item names, and the third column (far right) is far right.

Let's say you find a body to loot. Once you start looting, the 3 columns will pull up. The far left will show the amount of each item that is on the body, and the numbers on the right are the amount of those items that you already have.
*Note: this does NOT include the backpack's space- you must clikc "open bag" to access that inventory while looting.

Anyway, best tip i can give you is to stay away from the coast. Bandits loooove the coast as they can shoot new players and loot their initial goods for survival.

@wasabi - Yea the game engine is very POS'y, but I'm so intrigued by this mod that I bought it anyway. I have not tried the single player one moment.

@Beezy - The trick is to dance around between servers until you find one that is day time when the others are night. I typically play anywhere between 9pm-midnight Central, and I want to say Dallas 24,26,27, & 34 are all daytime servers when I'm on.

This thread lead me to the 'Days Ahead' youtube series... where a guy chronicled a huge group of Arma2 players that eventually get whittled down to 2. Sounds lame, I know... but the commentary is hilarious and I can't stop watching.
