all part of the frustration with the Oilers...

the Luv Ya Blue teams (1978-1980) were eliminated from the playoffs by the eventual Super Bowl champion each year

but Moon's Oilers (1987-1993) were knocked out by teams that usually lost the following weekend (except in 1987 & 1992). So many bad losses.

everyone remembers the Bills' loss in 1992, but in the 1991 playoff loss to the Broncos...the Oilers led 21-6 in the 1st half...and the offense disappeared at halftime

If you're a real die-hard, you remember the next year after the Bronocos playoff loss, the Oilers played the Broncos again in Denver again in the regular season. Oilers were off to a 4-1 start, went up 21-20 late in the game. Broncos got the ball at their own 20 and it took them 3 plays to win the game. The Oilers did not make a single tackle in those 3 plays. The first two were sideline passes that saw the WR run out of bounds. The third was a 20-yard touchdown run up the middle by Reggie Rivers on his only carry of the game.

My brother and I got to sit in a suite at the regular-season Bills game, which the Oilers dominated 27-3 to the point that Bucky RIchardson got a few snaps in. We were walking down the ramps hollering the HOUSTON OILERS chant with zero doubt we were headed to the Super Bowl.

Ha, you guys are bringing back memories for sure. Sooooo many gut wrenching losses. That's why the Titans loss to the Rams in the SB was so classic Houston Oilers. I hope Bud is in the hell of watching that play on endless loop for eternity.

I still have the Oilers doll my mom gave me with velcro arms, legs and head I could rip apart whenever they pissed me off. Good times.

The Texans don't have the dramatic gut wrenching losses like the Oilers did.

The Texans have the string of 9-7 division championships that ultimately fall to 2-14..... then the cycle repeats. (Except nows it's 10-7 with the added game)

That KC loss at KC when they were up 24-0 was pretty gut wrenching.

True, but they blew that lead by halftime so it wasn't gut wrenching, just unbelievable and angering.

Not only that, but because Tennessee had won the day before, if the texans had won, they would have hosted the AFC championship game. The closest they have been to the super bowl. Then the bottom fell out.

Idk, it wasn't even angering. We got up 24-0 helped by a fluke blocked punt TD… and all of watching it at my house and just said "they're not winning this, it'll be interesting to see how they blow this". That's Chiefs team was too damn good and we couldn't cover Kelce (no one could in the league at the time).

They scored 3 TDs in like 3:30 of game time because we made a dumb 4th down call and then fumbled the kickoff return. It was turned around quickly

My grandpa told me a long time ago that the only reason he is sad he'll be going to heaven is because he won't be able to watch Bud Adams burning in hell.

He passed this summer and I know he enjoyed watching the fake Oilers lose this past Sunday.

I was at the rodeo with my mom decades ago in my early 20s, and Drayton McLane was out on the floor calling the mutton busters or something.

My mom, 'What would you do if Bud Adams was out there instead?"
I replied, "Probably jump the rail and try to kill him."
She said that was horrible and I should be ashamed of myself.
She told my dad at home and my dad said, "What's the problem with that?"

Texans start their playoff run on Saturday and here we are with 2 pages discussing the suckiness of the Oilers, their epic choke jobs, and Bud Adams.

In fairness it's only Tuesday and we are closer to the game with the Titans cosplaying as the Oilers than to Saturday afternoon.

I am curious what our defensive strategy will be this weekend. Do you have Lassiter play the nickel against McConkey? If so, who steps in to CB2 slot and will Herbert just pick on that guy (Okudah?)?

Dobbins worries me too - we are not great against the run and our linebackers will have to stay disciplined.

Chargers have a very good secondary and Bosa. Offensively it could be a very tough day.

the Chargers are an interesting team

they are good to very good in many areas

and have a lot of good to very good players

but necessarily great or elite

LAC finished 1st in scoring defense

but that was debunked in the second half of the season when they got shredded by the Ravens (30 pts), Bucs (40 pts), Bengals (27 pts), and Broncos (27 pts)

There's a lot of statistical similarities between Houston and the Chargers. I know it's cliche but the entire game comes down to the offensive line. They have to give Stroud a clean pocket and time to pass, if he's getting hit and running for his life then we're not going to be in the game. Stroud (52) was sacked the second most of all QBs in the league, only behind Caleb Williams (68). Stroud staying on the field is key to the defense getting any sort of real rest between possessions. If the offense can't stay on the field it's only a matter of time before the defense gives up points. Herbert (41) was sacked the 7th most this year so the defensive line will get their chance to get after him.

We've watched the Texans play the last month. They're a road underdog to the 2nd place team in the crappiest division in the conference. If you want to do the position by position breakdowns, have at it.

I'm very confused by this post. Road? AFC West the crappiest division?

Yeah let's move on.

Other interesting tidbit - CJ is the youngest starting qb in the playoffs at 23.

This may not be the year, but I think he'll mature and our sweet spot will be 26-28 seasons.

When he's making $70 million/year? Have you take advantage of the here and now this year and next year.

Yes unless, possibly, he gains maturity and experience. He will be off his rookie contract in likely a year (I think they'll extend before Y4 and not Y5), so that's one more "year of rookie contract".

Since 2000, the QBs who have won a Super Bowl on their rookie contract:

  • Wilson
  • Brady
  • Mahomes
  • Roethlisberger
  • Flacco
  • Eli
  • Warner

It's obviously not this year, and could be next year, but he is still very very young and inexperienced, as is everyone around him.

I mean not much they can do as far as this year is concerned. Just go out and ball and try and get hot at the right time.

Next year is going to be a big year for CJ. He's going to need to take a pretty big step forward if he wants to start thinking about an extension because if plays like he did this year and year 1 turns out to be the anomaly it won't happen.

I think we win this weekend. Just a gut feeling and I think the homefield will play a factor.

It's a four year contract for first rounders, so we still have two more years after this one where he is relatively cheap.

And that only works if you're focusing that spending on high-performers in the D and both lines. Unfortunately we spent most of ours on WR who have been hurt or underproducing. Diggs + Keenum + Woods is like $31M in cap space. Add in another 9M or so for Tytus Howard and we haven't really spent those QB savings very well.

Daniel jones got a 2nd contract. CJ is locked in as our franchise QB. Only question is will he be the new highest paid QB in the nfl when it comes.

I'm aware it's 4 years I'm assuming we extend him early. Al-Shaair, Hunter, Mixon have been good. No way to know Diggs would be hurt. I liked the trade.
Texan_Aggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yes - most teams extend after the 3rd year.

Isn't it a 4 year contract with team option for 5?
Buck Compton
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Mahomes didn't extend until after year 4 when the team officially exercised the fifth year option.

Burrow, Hurts, and Herbert all signed extensions shortly before their fourth season. Notably, Hurts was a second round pick and thus had a completely different rookie contract.

Lamar Jackson signed one after the fifth year, and got to the point where the Ravens franchise tagged him before they reached an agreement.

And all of them were extensions in the truest sense-not replacing the last year of the contract. It would impact the "year 5" piece but not the 4th year cap. This isn't baseball with all the AAV shenanigans. It doesn't impact year 4 salary cap with the exception of signing bonus (depending on how it's structured). Signing bonus pro-rates for cap purposes.

Tytus has at least been serviceable as the No. 23 pick. Taking Kenyon at No. 15 and him being unplayable hurts far worse.

the Texans have to get it right with Stroud

cannot have a Dak or Kyler or Derek Carr situation
