It felt like the 49ers were just going to release him. So why give up the pick? Cowboys can give him time under to progress behind dak so maybe it'll work. But man that kid struggles at the line making reads

You're assuming that Lance would sign with the Cowboys as a free agent.

Well, McCarthy is a quarterback " guru" so he has two seasons to work his magic.

I don't hate it. I am all for taking a 4th-5th flyer every couple of years, so this is basically it. His base salary is $900k this year, $1mm next, and he's due a $4mm roster bonus in 2024.
Macarthur

Agree. He clearly has some tools that made teams think he was a top 10 pick. It's a cheap look for a year or two.

Per reporters from Broncos radio station, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Minnesota all inquired about Lance.

A team that traded three firsts for him hit eject and you're proud of us giving up a fourth? Could have waited for him to be cut or sent them a sixth.

Insurance in case they can't/won't re-sign Dak?

4th-7th round picks hold very, very little value. Only 10.8% of 4th round picks go on to be NFL starters.

This is a low cost deal to improve the backup QB situation. Guy was originally drafted in top 10. Not sure why people hate it. If he was released, we don't know if he would've picked the cowboys.

No guarantee you get him if cut and there were more teams so how do you know a 6th would have done it?

This was a great trade for the Cowboys. 4th round picks are like picking up a woman at the Chicken, Looked ok at first but then turns into a hassle and never works out after draft night..

Dak and Lance have similar skill sets. Dak is light years better than Lance right now but I think it is the perfect place for Lance and the Cowboys.

While a fourth has some value, are we looking at additional compensatory picks this off-season for Schultz, McGovern etc.?

This deal could be in the same vain as Gilmore and Cooks if so.

Proud? That's a ****ing weird way to describe what I posted. But no, I don't mind burning a midround pick on a qb flyer, and this is a team whose approach has been netting a lot of compensatory picks. And there was a market for him.

Covid really screwed up his college career. Physically very talented but green as hell. Getting him on the cheap and letting him season more is not a terrible move

The cowboys wanted to draft a QB this past spring and it never materialized. This more or less accomplishes that task.

Would you rather have two years of 23 YO Trey Lance or four years of 25YO Stetson Bennett?

I know it's many peoples fav pastime to poke fun at Jerruh, but their drafting and player acquisition process has been pretty damn solid for about a decade now. I think much of the credit belongs to Will McClay.

It just hasn't translated to on the field results. I think Garrett as coach held the team back a lot.
DannyDuberstein

Hasn't translated into post-season results for sure, which is obviously what matters most. They do have the 7th best winning percentage over the past 10 years. So a lot of good teams largely due to solid personnel, but gotta get the post-season monkey off their back

If the Niners would have released him he wouldn't have been a free agent. He had to clear waivers first. Any team ahead of the Coyboys in the draft last year would have been able to pick him off. I bet this got into a bit of a bidding war.

So the 49ers turned the #12 pick into a fifth rounder for 28 million, 2 firsts and a third

I like it. Dak has shown us that his ceiling is getting to the divisional round in the playoffs. He's not taking us all the way. We get someone with some potential for cheap. If he doesn't work out then we didn't waste much.

My 2 cents, for a 4th round pick they added depth at the most important position on the field. They don't need him as a starter so he can sit and develop. If he becomes a starter in the future, then it's a steal.

BassCowboy33
How long do you want to ignore this user?
My guess is they hope he develops into a solid backup? The guy hasn't shown much in limited time in SF. But for just a 4th, doesn't hurt to see what's there. He only played one season of college football and was drafted mainly on arm and size, always a dangerous way to draft.
Macarthur
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I find it really weird why someone would have a problem with this. The cowboys will most likely get compensatory picks so this is a very low risk look see at a top talent.

I don't have a problem with this at all, in any way. However, Lance is not a good QB right now. He's 1000% a 3rd string QB and has a ton of work to do to even be 2nd string. Just my opinion, but I think Lance's upside is at best a good backup at this point.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

He is only due $900k for this season but over $4 MM for next which is way too much for QB3. I assume if he shows no signs of being able to pass Rush on the depth chart he would be released before the $4 MM is due. Or is that money guaranteed? I'm not sure how the contracts work.

Dude hasn't played since he got in the NFL. He's been hurt the whole time. When he played, most of his stars weren't playing either. Even if he's a back up, it's worth it for at least a year. If you catch lightning in a bottle, you're a genius then.
