Cal McNair approved as Texans principal owner. Apparently, Cary McNair dropped his lawsuit to get his mom declared incapacitated.

Cary lost his case for guardianship over Janice. They all agreed a month ago to drop the other civil suits.

Yeah, he lost on a big issue and just agreed to withdraw remaining claims. Court essentially poured him out.

Draw your own conclusions what he must have been after.

I missed that. Just saw it noted in this. So I'm going to assume that Cary just wanted control in order to sell the organization

Ok, we're hitting that stretch of not much team action until the draft. So it's time to do some simulated drafts, because a good distraction from work is sometimes needed. Here's an interesting one I ran through that isn't a bunch of big names, but I would be pretty happy with it after free agency. Was moving down as much as I did worth getting 2 extra 2's next year?

I'm assuming he didn't want the family golden goose in the hands of Tommy Boy. I sure wouldn't!

We restructured Tytus Howard's contract to free even more cap space. Now we have $31M. Gotta be planning something.

Maybe Simmons and Aiyuk? Those two would sure up our biggest gaps outside of DT. Or maybe they're making a move for a big name DT? Hopefully it means fun times leading up to the draft!!

What do we package to SF to even get them interested in a trade for Aiyuk?

Actually rumors have been that he's on the trading block, San Fran is at the end of their window and going to start having some severe cap issues if they don't plan ahead. The issue is going to be value with the WR draft class as deep as it is, so if SF really wants to move him they're not going to get great value with any team. I think if we really really want him we could offer one of our 2nd rounders and they would jump at the chance. Also not sure if we would offer this year's picks or next. If next we could do conditional draft pick trade up to the extra 2nd rounder we got.

The issue with Aiyuk is that IIRC he's a FA after this year and wants a big contract on par with a #1 WR.

SF isn't willing to do that so he's on the block.

We'd have to pony up because I doubt he's gonna go somewhere that won't pay him what he wants.

Yeah, that's the only reason he's available is that he's going to be big money. But so will anyone else we really want to trade for. San Fran also has the issue of deciding what to do with Pudy, since they only have 2 years left on his insanely cheap 7th round rookie contract. That's going to be a massive jump in the portion of their salary cap even if they somehow don't have to sign him to a top 10 contract.

IMO they are planning for the future here with restructuring all these deals. If they're a piece away at the deadline, having room in the cap to get a game changer is smart. Also consider how many guys came over through the year. I bet we see a lot of the same action this year.

I'm not expecting any large signings the rest of the offseason.

I think it's the opposite. They must be planning for room for this year.
Planning for the future would mean taking the cap hit in 2024 instead of spreading that into future years, which is essentially what these changes do. These moves create future dead money on their books.

The NFL trade deadline doesn't ever live up to the hype. Every season everyone talks about trade speculation and players available etc etc and only a couple trades get made and they're for mostly role players.

Teams aren't typically getting that one piece that sets up at the top of the division or conference at the deadline.

Same for players that are added off the street during the season.

These aren't typically guys you have to rework contracts and make room for.

Don't forget Collins is also a UFA after this coming season. Wouldn't make sense to trade for Aijuk and also deal with his contract as well as Collins. If they're planning on anything it's gotta be elsewhere.

Unless they like Aiyuk more than Collins. The fact that we haven't heard anything so far on contract negotiations makes me wonder if they're waiting on Collins to see if he can continue the success next year. But, with that said, I bet this is a play for a DT or filling in the roster with room to spare in case they do get a deal done with Nico.

https://www.nfl.com/news/four-round-2024-nfl-mock-draft-jets-take-te-brock-bowers-chiefs-trade-up-for-speedster-in-round-1

I would take this draft in a heart beat if things fell this way:
42 - Kool-Aid McKinstry CB (Bama)
59 - Keon Coleman WR (FSU)
86 - Kris Jenkins DT (Michigan)
123 - Edefuan Ulofoshio LB (Washington)

I think they are planning for this year.

What I am saying is they will be picking guys up that come off of other rosters as training camp gets under way, guys that are going to cost a few million each as they grab them. The Texans signed more FA than any other team last year and I would anticipate they do the same thing this year.

It's also possible that they make a trade as the offseason rolls on that may cause them to take a cap hit.

All of the positions of need have starter level players available when the Texans pick in the draft. They aren't freeing up cap space to sink it all into a couple of nearly 30 yo players for a year or two.

I'd rather have Simmons than trade for a WR. It's a deep WR draft and Collins will need to get paid.

I think if we bring in another established higher end receiver who's going to have a high cap hit past this year, that signals that Nico doesn't have the belief of the FO as a legit top 2 guy and we aren't looking to give him that kind of money

They put out a season "mini movie". It looks like multiple teams do this, but thought it was a pretty fun watch. Just nice to have some hope again!
