Wilkins is still the better guy to sign but Armstead could be a nice addition as well for the right price.

Tee can be a bit injury prone

can expect him to miss 3 or 4 games a year

Yeah pass on Higgins.

He's too injury prone to give him the size contract he's probably wanting.

Looks like they're dumping Armstead to make room for attempting to resign Kinlaw after he had a good playoff run.

Or signing Bosa's brother if the Chargers cut him

Wow, final numbers on Chris Jones, 5 years 158.75 million with 101 million guaranteed.

Sounds like it's basically a 3 year deal, and years 4-5 are there to spread the cap hit. Generally speaking, guaranteed money is spread across the length of the contract for cap purposes, which would make his cap hit $19M ($95M/5) the first few years instead of ~$31.7M ($95M/3).

I'm sure they've done some other stuff so it won't be that cut and dry, but it looks like that's essentially the game they're playing here.
That's what I thought, but the reason for my confusion was this section I've seen pop up in different articles (like this one): https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2024/mar/10/chris-jones-kansas-city-chiefs-agree-to-record-breaking-five-year-contract

"The money that is guaranteed is expected to come over the first three years with another two years that are not guaranteed. The deal makes Jones the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history."

So they will be able to cut him with no cap issues after the 3rd year, but that would also mean his cap number is astronomical in the first 3 years. I guess we'll find out when full details are released. Just seems very strange

For us, full steam ahead on Christian Wilkins

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. Generally speaking, a player's total cap hit is the unguaranteed base salary plus the prorated guaranteed money. In Jones's case, his prorated guaranteed money is $19M per year if we keep it simple (his contract is likely anything but simple in reality, but this is just message board talk).

Since his first 3 years are guaranteed with no unguaranteed base, his cap hit would be just $19M. But in years 4 and 5, Jones's total cap hit is $19M + ~$35M (or whatever his unguaranteed base salary will be to get him up to the highest in history). If they cut him in year 4, the dead cap hit would be $38M (remaining prorated guaranteed $). So they'll probably convert some base salary to a bonus to spread the cap hit to year 5, then cut him year 5. Or extend him in year 4 to effectively do the same (spread cap hit further).

His contract is a nice reminder that the salary cap in the NFL is a myth. Teams routinely spend more in actual $ than the cap because they can prorate some of it to future years and count on cap increases. Also part of why Deshaun Watson's contract was so stupid. Making it 100% guaranteed gave Cleveland no flexibility to play some of the salary cap games that the good teams (like KC) do.

All aboard the Wilkins train. He's the one I've wanted most from the start.

Interesting, they skewed it hard for just this year and not the next 3. Jones's cap hit this year is only 7.34 million, then jumps to 34.8 next year and 41.1 the year after before they could do the out in 2027. So, I'm guessing they're leveraging 2025 and 2026 on heavy contract restructures across the team, because Jones and Mahomes are going to count towards a little below and then a little above 100 million against the cap in 2025 and 2026.

Legal tampering is about to start, lots of teams are going to start clearing house when they try to redo contracts and the players won't budge because they know who else could be interested in their services. I don't think it's coincidence that Higgins started asking for a trade today. He has to know they're not going to extend him long term because Chase is going to be the priority, and he's going to get WR1 money somewhere else. There were also plenty of rumors that they franchised him to try to flip him for a first round pick because that's much better than getting a compensatory pick later. Higgins and Cincinnati might have cooperated to put that out there so he can try to get a long term deal and they can get a good pick in exchange.

I'm now all on board with the Texans skipping the big name RB free agents and instead resigning Singletary and adding 2 more next tier RBs on prove it contracts. AJ Dillon, Gus Edwards, Antonio Gibson, Kareem Hunt, etc. SF always had 3 RBs rotating until they got CMC. Could work here with the right guys.

Keep adding defense and then draft a WR from this loaded draft to improve the depth.

The fun starts soon.

It's a good point, and I think any of those guys could be great in this offense. I'm hoping for a lot of dominos to drop right away when this kicks off in 4 minutes.

I think D'Andre Swift is getting lost in the discussions about Barkley, Jacobs, and Henry. He's been really productive the last couple of seasons, he's also a guy that works better as part of a group of RB's due to his size. If they could add him and bring in a power back I'd be happy with that too.

https://www.nfl.com/news/wr-michael-pittman-colts-expected-to-finalize-three-year-contract

Michael Pittman contract extension details, which are applicable as they're probably what we'd expect it to cost to resign Collins. 3 years for $70MM ($23.3MM/year) up to $71.5 with incentives, $46MM guaranteed.

4 years, $76MM with $42MM guaranteed feels a little rich for one season of high end production. But I suppose that's also cheaper than what Hunter wants this offseason from them.

Only thing I can find on Twitter is a post from a blue check account claiming the Eagles offer is higher than the Texans, but there is definitely more chatter about the Eagles than the Texans.

I don't like that the running back market is closing quickly and we may be the on the outside looking in.

Down to Barkley or Henry…if we don't get either, our run game might be wretched this year.
