Bieniemy Still not a HC

I agree that Eric Bieniemy ought to be a head coach. He has helped lead the Chiefs to 2 Super Bowl wins and 3 Super Bowl appearances. I wasn't surprised that the Colts hired Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, but I was surprised that the Cardinals hired Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon over Eric Bieniemy. I think Bieniemy's long list of legal issues from over two decades ago has prevented him from landing a head coaching job. His best hope to become a head coach is to take over when Andy Reid retires.

Though each instance occurred more than two decades ago, Eric Bieniemy has a fairly extensive list of legal issues. He was cited at least eight times between 1988 and 2001, including harassment, a DUI, a bench warrant, traffic violations, a bar fight and interfering with a firefighter. When interviewing for a head coaching job in the NFL, the organization looks at every aspect of the candidate's history. It all happened a long time ago, but could still potentially hurt him for potential job openings.

Still amazes me that NFL owners as a collective... who spend millions of dollars every month on payroll to black athletes... are constantly accused of racism.

The equal outcome over equal opportunity people's goal of creating a clown world will never cease to blow my mind.
I'm not saying Bienemey not getting a HC gig is because of racism but the quoted post above is nonsense. Anyone with a brain should be able to see coaching opportunities, especially head coaching jobs, are a completely different animal than playing opportunities. 57.5% of players in the NFL in 2023 are black yet they make up 8.7% of coaches. Right now there are 4 black head coaches if you include Mike McDaniel who identifies as biracial. Surely you can understand why this angers the black community, right?

The entitlement of the black race in this country is flat out pathetic. The reason why there aren't more black coaches is because there are more talented options. Just like the players themselves. You draft and sign who you feel is the best you can get….

Damn, dude...

Supposedly he's interviewing with Washington to be their OC. As of right now they said their QB1 going into the season is Sam Howell. They have some nice pieces in Washington, if he were to install an offense that Sam Howell performs really well in then it would speak volumes about him. The fact that he has Mahomes and the rest of the KC offense could work against him because it's such a great group. He could just be leveraging for a raise in KC though.

Pretty much my thoughts. It seems his only path to becoming a HC is to prove himself somewhere else as an OC. Maybe if he at least called the plays in KC he would get more credit but everyone knows that's Reid's offense. Go implement a successful offense somewhere else and he'll get HC offers.

I'm not sure using Whitlock is making the point you think it is...

His point of trying to equate somehow to what may be going on with Don Lemon was weird and made no sense.

I think the league has done a much better job on the hiring front recently. As one poster pointed out above, the Rooney rule really did a good job of causing folks to step out of their comfort zone.

I am not using it to make any points. Just put that there as another talking point. I found it interesting.

If he goes somewhere and actually calls the plays, everyone will see why he was never hired as a HC. Just like Leftwich

A bunch of guys hired instead of him over the last five years, have already been fired and are among some of the worst head coaching hires in recent history.

Maybe he doesn't interview well, but damn if the guys that "do" mostly suck when they get the jobs. Or maybe they guys doing the interviews are really bad at their jobs. In any case it's pretty astounding that no one has decided to zig while everyone else zags and just give him a shot. For gods sake Urban Meyer, Nathaniel Hackett, Adam Gase etc have been hired over him in recent years. The bar is realllllllly low.

You should go back and watch Nick Sirianni's press conferences early on.

Winning cures everything.

I don't think there's a real path. If he goes somewhere else, anything but the conference champ game will be seen as "he aint **** without reid/mahomes". It will be an impossible standard with mediocre talent to do it with. On top of that, I bet it will be dismissed anyway. He still won't be considered to interview well, he still won't be thought of someone who leads men and still won't have cleared up his CU issues. By then, he maybe at 20+ interviews with no HC gig and then that's the main narrative.

Coordinators aren't judged on conference championship games. They are judged on how well the offense performs. If he goes to Washington and has a top 10 offense with Howell at qb, then he will get major credit and I think he will get a HC gig in a couple years. But it's very risky on his part going somewhere with a qb who isn't even slightly proven bc if he flames out, then everyone will say it's because he didn't have Reid (and won't grade him in a curve of having a terrible qb).

We are all about to find out!

If I were him, I'd have checked my ego and stayed in KC and rode Reid and Mahomes' coattails for as long as they would keep paying me.

He wants a head coach job. Going somewhere to be a full time play caller is a smart move. Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn't.

Yup, I still think this was his only real move to become a HC. He has to show that he can be the sole play caller, otherwise why would anyone hire him if they then need to go get a A level OC and DC?

Woman beater who didn't run the offense. I wouldn't have hired him either regardless if he was black, white, or purple. Now we'll see what he's got.

His only actual coordinator experience was 10 years ago at CU where he put together one of the worst offenses in college football for 2 years.

Listen to the Chiefs players talk about the offense right after their win. They mention "Pat and Andy" as the guys that make the offense tick. Not even the guys within the system believe that he's the reason their offense is so good because it is outweighed by Andy Reid's involvement. Couple that with the past transgressions and his only way to give himself a shot is to leave Mahomes and Reid and do it on his own.

So he's a complete afterthought for the team he coaches... but here on TexAgs he's worth numerous TLDR posts about why the NFL is / isn't racist. Awesome!

The most concerning set of allegations against Bieniemy surrounds a harassment allegation from a parking attendant, who alleges that he put his hands on her neck and startled her. While the alleged victim described the incident as "not painful," she did describe it as startling. A member of Bieniemy's party, after Bieniemy had left, was also accused of assaulting a different attendant who asked what was going on.

Quite the woman beater.

it's ok to hate him as a hire because you don't think hes good at his job or you believe guys like Shady about his leadership. Likewise, it's ok to understand that other guys are getting HC jobs with much less experience, scrutiny, and not being forced to play call or getting credit coaching really good QBs while he doesn't.

Except for, you know, the words of the actual people who everyone gives credit for the offense for - Reid and Mahomes. I wasn't aware that Reid spent so much energy trying to convince teams that Eric is worthy to be a HC if hes an afterthought.

Again, racism isn't just "im not gonna hire you because you are black". Racism can also be unfair scales...and its also discounting racism completely because there might be other factors at play. The fact that its being reduced to be a digital "is/isn't" I think misunderstands the issue.

I've added no additional comments to anything related to the racism topic since page 1. I made a joke about how I hope he's terrible at Washington (as a Cowboys fan) and about how a bunch of us (including me) had made a bunch of long winded posts.

You are the only one trying to re-light that fire after several posters had already gotten the thread back on track. It's all good, just let it go.
