So what are the options?

I just can't see them fitting this game in before the playoffs. That would put both these teams in a terrible position. I wonder if they just cancel this game and go by win %. Or call it a 0-0 tie

Could they delay the start of the playoffs? That would give all the other teams a bye week while they played the Bengals-Bills game? Would be unbalanced to those two teams not to have the extra rest. If they don't have to finish the game, then it will impact the seeding for the AFC as the #1 seed is still to be determined. Do they count it as a tie?

They ****ed it up big time. Should've played the game tonight.

Now either they will cancel the game and give the chiefs an improper advantage, or delay the entire post season one week and give the entire playoff field an advantage and the bengals/bills a big disadvantage.

I guess they could also technically award the game to the Bengals since they were ahead at the time. Makes about as much sense as the other options.

Don't see how you do win %.

Bills win next week their win % -.8125
Chiefs win next week - .8235

However, the Bills beat the Chiefs in a head to head matchup AND the Bills strength of schedule is higher than the Chiefs.

A lot of this mess wouldn't be an issue if the NFL didn't expand the playoffs and go to only one team having a first round bye.

The players were not in the right mindset to play. There was no way they were finishing that game last night

I think the players would have refused to play last night.

I think they did refuse. The NFL is in spin control now but someone connected to the league communicated to the ESPN broadcast crew that the teams were going to be given 5 minutes to warmup before resuming play after Hamlin was taken off the field.

Vince McMahon would have had the game finish up last night.

I wondered if perhaps that was some generic thing. Anything in NFL rules about a disruption in play of X time results in a 5 minute warmup for each team kinda thing?

True, He proved that in Montreal. The NFL players have union. The WWE does not have. I understand that in Australia, wrestlers are members of Actors Equity.

ESPN put out a statement saying that is what was communicated to them from a league representative.

I get that. Was just wondering if, at the time, they were operating off a SOP. For a brief moment things seemed somewhat templated.

I had just gotten back from the gym and turned on the broadcast...

They (ESPN) announced 5 minute warmup, then quickly noted that no one was warming up and then pivoted back to the extreme emotion.

Resuming the game would have been pretty much every guy out there at injury risk because there's no way there heads would have been in the game.

Doubtful since the game commenced. They'll reissue tickets/reactivate bar codes if or when the event is rescheduled.

Former A&M player Reggie Brown received CPR on the field and was rushed to hospital during a 1997 game in Detroit.

Because of social media. The nfl is in a no win situation and will be criticized on social media regardless. By internet cowards who don't watch football and can't even afford to by nfl merchandise.

Regardless of why the world has changed or if for the worse or better, it has and the players, coaches and refs were NOT going to continue on Monday.

And that's not even taking into account the logistical nightmare of pushing an NFL game back a day with basically zero notice or prep time.

The difference is optics, but I don't mean that in a cynical way. I mean what the players (and fans) actually saw. In the other cases that people bring up the injured player was rushed off the field/court/ice and people didn't really know the severity of the situation until later. I'm sure the NFL would have loved to have him off the field, finish the game and then issue a very serious sounding press release later about a cardiac event and critical condition at the hospital.

But what the players saw was a guy getting he chest pounded on for 10 minutes on the field. It was basically that scene from every action movie where someone dies and they end up pulling the frantic cpr guys off and saying "stop man, he's gone" But it was in real life on the field. Zero way for anyone to compartmentalize that and play the game, like you could if a guy is just taken off the field and you don't know what happened.

Since both teams chose not to finish the game and then "refused" to play Tuesday- both teams should forfeit and take a loss -

I agree.

however Monday night's situation does open the lid to Pandora's box a little bit more...in giving players the power to cancel games...for whatever reason.

and generally speaking that is not good for the league

I too would like an explanation for how this gives players more power. W has a knack so odd theories that don't have much factual support

Is it an improper advantage though?

Players get hurt all the time, and teams lose (or win) because of it. It's part of the game. Someone got hurt, and the outcome of the game, standings, etc is effected by it.

Games are hardly ever outright cancelled though.

Quote:

ARTICLE 4. EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

The NFL affirms the position that in most circumstances all regular-season and postseason games should be played to their conclusion. If, in the opinion of appropriate League authorities, it is impossible to begin or continue a game due to an emergency, or a game is deemed to be imminently threatened by any such emergency (e.g., severely inclement weather, lightning, flooding, power failure), the following procedures (Articles 5 through 11) will serve as guidelines for the Commissioner and/or the duly appointed representatives. The Commissioner has the authority to review the circumstances of each emergency and to adjust the following procedures in whatever manner the Commissioner deems appropriate. If, in the Commissioner's opinion, it is reasonable to project that the resumption of an interrupted game would not change its ultimate result or adversely affect any other inter-team competitive issue, the Commissioner is empowered to terminate the game.
Quote:

ARTICLE 8. INTERRUPTED GAME

If, under emergency circumstances, an interrupted regular-season or post-season game cannot be completed on the same day, such game will be rescheduled by the Commissioner and resumed at that point.
