this is one of those situations...

where it didn't take a doctor or neuroscientist or whatever...to see that something was wrong.

just common sense

Yet we had folks on this thread saying neuroscientists who've dedicated their entire careers to CTE didn't know because they weren't an md.

There is a difference between a guy giving an expert opinion and an expert giving an extreme take for free publicity and attention. The issue is I dont think that guy had a good motive.

I'm not surprised. I'm no neurologist but I've managed a lot of concussions and have been a high school football doc in the past. No way I would have cleared him last week just from the on the field video.

I'd love to know the doc's side of the story. I'm guessing he's bound by patient confidentiality and can't divulge it, and THAT is why he was thrown under the bus. However, that is just a guess.

As stated earlier, the NFLPA can't seem to make up its mind which way it wants to go on these things: does it want its players on the field or not? If the doc didn't clear him to play and he insisted he was fine, do they fire him in that case?

Either way, if I'm one of the other neurologists, I'm quitting right now. No way I want to be involved in this **** show. Its one thing to screw up. If that's what happened, that is, of course, on the doc. But I have a hard time believing the NFL and the NFLPA just picked some yahoo out of the phone book.

There are computer based tests that can be failed on purpose but not passed unless you are really not brain impaired. I suspect he didn't follow the required testing protocol in this case just used a symptom score which Tua can easily lie and pass if he wanted to. It is up to the doc to protect the player especially for brain injury as people are not in their rational mind immediately after a concussion and cannot be relied on to make a smart decision.

C3Logix is the program I have personal experience with and it is pretty amazing how accurate it is at diagnosis and monitoring for return to baseline after injury.

If these Neuro docs just followed set protocols and ya know, did their friggin job, then they wouldn't be fired.

So you're saying that without a doubt IN THE NFL there's no politics at play here?

Not saying you're wrong. There's a good chance you're correct. However, I'm skeptical that anyone the team/NFLPA would choose is going to screw up this badly, especially if the test is as you describe. He's got his medmal and rep to think about.

I just have some skepticism here.

I don't have any inside info but I strongly suspect that Tua and/or the coaching staff put immense pressure on the doc who didn't stand his ground and caved into pressure.

That was pretty much my point. And now the NFLPA is throwing the doc under the bus because they either don't want to expose themselves, their player, or the protocol for the fraud it is (not so much the protocol itself but how they follow it). Your response to me seemed to suggest that the doc screwed up on his own. Maybe your point was that the doc should have had more courage but I'm wondering if that was realistic in his situation.

The doctors job is to ignore the outside pressure from players or teams. Other doctors have done it.

IF this guy didn't follow the protocols or succumbed to pressure, that's 100% on him.
