First timer here. 14 team standard scoring.

Won first matchup, but my D/ST (Texans) kept losing me points. I read online that Houston defense vs Brees wouldn't be good, but I simply figured why waste time on d/st (this is my ignorance here). Pick a defense and go with it.

They lost like 16 points, ending at -4. The match with my opponent was 185-186 in the last minute until another DeAndre Hopkins reception put me ahead (Jameis Winston had me in this predicament to begin with) for the win.

What do you do? Do you main one d/st? Change it up with various matchups?

I usually stream each week --- pick a new one each week.

however since the Texans are hosting the Foles-less Jaguars in week 2...I might hold on to the Houston D/ST for one more week

Thanks.

How do you go about making your decisions?

Thanks again for the help. Not only am I new to the game, I haven't followed NFL in over 20 years.

I change my defense most every week. I look at weak offenses and match ups.
This week I'm looking at:
- Carolina
- Texans
- Patriots

1) Get a copy of the Dolphins' schedule
2) Pick up their opponent every week
3) Profit

Only stick with a single D if they are really good, even then be prepared to pick up other options when you're great D is playing a top offense. Otherwise, stream as possible.

I'm looking at opponents of Miami and Tampa as my first options every week, then a next tier of teams playing less experienced/meh QBs but aren't the absolute disasters those teams are (Jax, Cincy, NYG, Buf, Arizona). Avoid bad defenses unless they are playing a Florida team.

Edit: misread part of the OP.

Wow, been doing fantasy for 20 years and never come across a defense calculated like that.

Also this will be dependent on your league scoring....some leagues factor total points given up while others will put more weight on sacks, fumbles, interceptions.

In the latter case, in may not be intuitive but selecting a streaming defense that will see a higher number of passing plays will be better than what that defense ranks as whole. More passing plays faced = more chances for sacks, INTs. This is really common if you play daily fantasy sports.

For the OP however, sounds like you just want a defense that isn't going to give up points. I'd look at Dallas or Buffalo as two potential defenses that may not be currently owned in your league. Dallas has a favorable upcoming schedule.

Picked up the Patriots' D in my NFL league.

37 points on 7 sacks, 4 turnovers, 2 defensive TDs, and 0 points allowed.

Same here. 35 points in my .5 PPR league

looking at young QB's this week.

Tampa at home vs. NYG/Jones making his first start is a good one.

Seattle at home vs. NO/Bridgewater is another good one.

SF at home vs. Pittsburgh/Rudolph too

and as previously mentioned...be on the look out for someone dropping the Chargers defense this week since they play the Texans.

Yep, it used to be the Browns, although they might still be in that category.

Thanks for the replies.

I won my first two matchups, barely. Both came down to the wire.

I think it's all downhill from here versus teams with stronger lineups.
