No question about that.

No matter your thoughts on O'Brien, you have to realize that Smith has severely handicapped this team over the past few years.

Special teams are made up from the players that he has missed badly on. I believe that is one easy way to see the fall outs from his drafting ability.

Smith has a tremendous record with 1st round picks - I'll give credit where it is due

2006 - Mario Williams (4x Pro Bowl selection. 1x All-Pro first-team selection.)
2007 - Amobi Okoye (Bust/Injuries)
2008 - Duane Brown (3x Pro Bowl selection. 1x All-Pro first-team selection.)
2009 - Brian Cushing (1x Pro Bowl selection. 2009 Defensive ROY)
2010 - Kareem Jackson (Solid contributor)
2011 - JJ Watt (4x Pro Bowl selection. 4x All-Pro first-team selection. 3x Defensive POY)
2012 - Whitney Mercilus (1x Pro Bowl selection)
2013 - DeAndre Hopkins (1x Pro Bowl election. 1x All-Pro second-team selection.)
2014 - Jadeveon Clowney (1x Pro Bowl selection)
2015 - Kevin Johnson (Shows promise, can't stay healthy)
2016 - Will Fuller (Jury is still out)
2017 - Deshaun Watson (Jury is still out)

Of his 12 first round picks, all but 2 are still on the roster (not all playing obviously).

He has also found solid players through UDFA has also been good with Foster, Bouye, Brisiel.

HOWEVER, his strategy for rounds 2-7 appears to be more like throwing darts at a dart board than actual vetting of players ability and desire to be successful in the NFL. That and he's whiffed on some pretty big FA signings lately (Osweiler, Allen, Bergstrom) while hitting on some previously (Joseph, Manning).

You only need to get one good long term QB to have a good record as a GM (assuming you don't let him leave later on down the road). So my list of GMs with good records would be:

Packers - Favre and Rodgers
Pats - Drafted Brady
Saints - Got Brees
Giants - 2 SBs with Eli
Broncos - Got Peyton
Seahawks - Drafted Wilson
Steelers - Big Ben

And there's probably more that aren't jumping to mind right now

Good call, I was going with SB winning QBs, but the above list is also above average (maybe TBD on some) and 100x better than what we have
