Bringing an NFL team to Las Vegas is a terrible idea.

I don't understand the rational for people thinking this will be a disaster.

W nailed it above:

I think an NFL team in Las Vegas is a masterstroke. And the league is going to kick itself for not having done it 10 years earlier

The fans from out of town will be excited about going to a Raiders game, until they realized that they will be surrounded by Raider fans.

The few times I have watched even part of a Raiders home game on TV, I've found that baseball diamond cut into the middle of the field to be the ugliest thing I've ever seen during a football game. High School fields look a ton better than that.

Would they really comp tickets? Going to a game takes time away from gambling and may be draining, thus decreasing the likelihood that the patrons will return to the casino floor

If the casinos buy their own boxes - their patrons won't have to stop gambling.

I think it is a great move. NHL is putting a team there as well.

There will be tons of fans travelling to every game. There are about 1 millions visitors per week to Vegas. I'll bet some of them might want to see a football game.
Games on Sunday make it interesting, though. Tough to catch an NFL before a regular flight, which means that fans have to plan to stay until Monday, or schedule a late flight. Both are tough for Average Joe Vegas visitor

They're going to need to build a strong local fanbase (which, for the record, I think is totally possible) and then supplement that with out-of-towners. I don't think this works with predominantly out of town fans.

I always thought the diamond in the football field was about as cool as it got growing up.

This was pretty standard 30 years ago. San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, Anahiem, San Diego, Houston, St. Louis, Miami, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Baltimore all had multipurpose stadiums that housed both NFL and MLB teams. As new stadiums got built over the years, both the NFL and MLB wanted sport specific stadiums. Oakland was the last city with a multipurpose stadium. The fact that they couldn't get a sport specific stadium built for the Raiders and wouldn't kick out the A's led directly to the Raiders moving to Vegas.

On a side note, the A's would have moved to San Jose years ago but the SF Giants blocked them by claiming territorial rights over Silicon Valley. MLB sided with the Giants. Now, the A's are in a position to build a baseball only stadium on the current Coliseum site. If they can't get it done in the next few years they would also be a serious candidate to relocate.

Vegas proper is 600k+ and the metro area is almost 2 million. It's big enough to support an NFL team.

LA metro is 6x that and didn't support a team for over 20 years. The Rams experiment's first year was anything but a clear success. Doesn't mean it won't work long term -- and I think the Rams belong in LA -- but you can't just write figures on a piece of paper and assume things work solely on that.

Half of these had the turf where the sand was only on cut out portions and minimal. Candlestick had turf and later grass.

The jury is out on whether LA will fully support a franchise (or 2), but the new stadium is going to be built in a much more accessible area than the coliseum.

Hollywood Park is very accessible from LAX and the freeway. It will also be a massive multi use area with lots of **** around it that will attract fans.

Three factors that should be taken into consideration are:

1. Las Vegas does not have any other professional sports franchises. While they are getting an NHL team, football is far more popular than hockey in the desert. Los Angeles has and will always be a Laker and Dodger town.

2. The Raiders, unlike the Rams or Chargers, have a fanbase that is national and travels well. I was surprised that nearly 10,000 Raiders fans were at the AFC Wild Card game in January.

3. Fans from all over the country are going to go to Vegas to watch their team play the Raiders. This will drive up the secondary ticket prices too. Four buddies will say "Let's go to Vegas, get trashed, gamble and watch our football team for a whole weekend."

Well, I was directly responding to a comment that Vegas isn't big enough to support an NFL team, which I think (and thought) was wrong. I didn't say that its population made this move an auto success.

Putting my thought another way, if this move fails, it won't be because finding fans in a city of Vegas' size is impossible.

I just read an article on ESPN that informed me that UNLV will be playing in this stadium too. This makes them a huge beneficiary the move. If you're looking to step away from the games for a little while, catching a game in a 2 billion dollar stadium (that's on the edge of the strip) is a fun change of pace, even without a rooting interest.

NHL will be a huge success as well. Do you think fans from Edmonton might want to make a road trip to Vegas and escape the Alberta winter for a few days?

Alll I can say is that people will never see a super bowl weekend quite like the impending one whenever Vegas is first available.

I spent a few days in vegas last week and most locals (cab drivers, dealers, etc) are excited for the NHL and Raiders. They mostly talked about the amount of jobs created and driving up the economy of the area...seemed like they didn't care as much about who the team was.
