An unfortunate and sad reality that probably has multiple excuses but is still unacceptable. Even established, reputable companies are "participating"
It's one thing to automate screening candidates quickly and narrow down to finalists, at least that (is supposed to) send a quick rejection and lets everyone move on quickly (even though the logic is also suspect but that's another topic)
But the worst is when a small pool of finalists get face to face interviews and then hear nothing for 6 weeks plus, despite attempts at follow up. How hard is it to communicate with a small pool of finalists? "We moved on" or "the position is on hold", etc....or set up the automated rejection at 2AM?
Maybe someone who is/has worked in HR can give me a valid excuse why there isn't follow up with finalists. (Hint: There is none). Maybe it just comes down to laziness, tech, and process above people
Also I think interviewees should ask hard questions about timeframes and internal candidates BEFORE the face to face interview
