Do companies pay relocation anymore?

Back in the old days, every job paid relocation. If they wanted you to move from A to B, they paid for it. I got relocation when I got out of A&M, though I hardly had anything with me.

What is the situation now? Is the employee expected to pay all expenses? Or is it paid based on level like VP and up?

The obvious answer is, yes, they do.

In your specific situation? I dunno. You're the tech space stuck in the midwest poster right? Are you stuck because noone will pay you to move where you'd rather be or are you stuck in the midwest for other reasons? I'm not in tech, but from the outside looking in, nearly every person in the sector ballyhooed and leveraged themselves higher levels of work from home ability. Now companies are less likely to pay relo because they are paying everyone to work from home? That doesn't sound surprising to me at all.

in my industry they pay for a good majority of it outside of real estate loss / fees / commissions.


if i were to be asked to move i'd likely get a few thousand depending on location (5-20k)


have a good friend that was given a package by Intel to move from Houston to Phoenix that amounted over 60k after realtor commissions and even a real estate equity pre-payment.

Every single company I've worked for has paid for relocation. However, they don't pay it for every single position. If they post a position and they have a ton of good local candidates apply, then chances are they won't want to pay relocation for someone in another state.

I am not sure how.
Back in 1998, every company I had heard of paid relo. I just had my books and clothes, nothing more, but they shipped that from College Station. I stayed with my dad's undergrad friend in the new location so they did not pay hotel either. But that is a different story.

I have lived in the same town since. So I have never relocated. So I don't know what the expectations are. I am interviewing right now and some jobs are remove and I have to be prepared to someone saying the job is in Austin or San Fran or whatever.

It's not that no one will pay, I am looking to know what to be prepared for. I was with a company with a SF presence and I had talked to my boss about wanting to move there. He said yes, the company will support the move but I had to pay relo myself. That made sense - I wanted to move, they did not ask me to move. But we had a layoff since and all that is out of the window.

But what happens when I apply to a new job that is in a different city? Do companies expect you to pay relo or do they not consider you at all? You may be right in your logic on work from home situations. Why pay when people can work remotely? But not all companies are this way so I was wondering what the current norms were.

I had interviewed with Intel back in the day in Portland. Did not get it, but then those were A&M days when I didn't know what I wanted to do! Sometimes though I wonder if I still do....?

Is this a recent situation with your friend?

Good point. Makes sense.
So if I want to move to the Bay, then it may so happen that I pay for the move myself. I should ask a few folks who live there to see what's the latest.
