i got laid off from a product mgmt role in feb, and since then have applied to close to 100 PM roles via LNKD, indeed, everything. Not a ****ing peep. No follow-up, just the same BS canned "we appreciate your time" email 3 weeks later. My resume is great, I have skills and experience. I just don't get it.

I have heard and learned that it is really difficult to get employment via LinkedIn. You may need to get a recruiter or try to build a relationship via LinkedIn with the person responsible for hiring for that role. At the end of the day it is about connections and relationships that you can build with the company.

Husband applied to hundreds of jobs when he was laid off and didn't hear a single peep. Don't let it get you down. I kept telling him the same thing - that it was going to be who you knew. He asked anyone we knew if they knew about any jobs or people hiring. At the end of the day he got a job by asking someone he was guiding a hunt for if they had a job opening and they did. The worst thing you can do is let it get you down.

I got my job because my wife's boss was looking for someone with a science background and she knew I had one because I took her produce from my garden and talked small talk. Wasn't even looking at her firm.

It's your network.

I can't echo the others enough. It's your network. I had the same issue in an industry that is so understaffed that they are literally throwing money at people.

I reached out to one person in my network just to catch up and told him I was looking. He reached out to someone in his network and 10 minutes later my resume was in front of the CISO. I started 3 weeks later.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. That is unfortunate.

You say your resume is great. 100 prospective employers are saying it isn't.

You say you have the skills and experience. 100 prospective employers are telling you that experience and those skills are improperly being presented.

Yes, the network is important. So is the document.

I recommend you revisit that document. Best wishes.

You may want to check out the post below by Aggie95. Looks like they may have a few new spots soon. Most people try to hire someone they know or have a network connection with through schools, a friend's recommendation, etc. As a hiring manager, when you get 75 resumes, with only 25% qualified, you tend to look for something to help make the decision a bit more streamlined and the recommendations of those you trust can be key.

How did I miss that?!? Thank you!!!

Thanks to everyone in the thread. This whole job search is so draining but hey the Israelites had to spend 40 years in the desert to reach Canaan. Could be worse. Have a great week y'all

Every job I ever had in oil and gas, real estate, and what I do now has been from direct contact and word of mouth. My last three corporate gigs were solidified with a phone call on Friday afternoon followed by walking in the door to work Monday. No interview. No BS.

I'm not convinced that online job applications arent the bare minimum attempt at a lazy HR person doing what they were told.

For what it's worth, last month I got a denial notification from a job I applied for in 2017…through LinkedIn. Lol.

It's not you.

I've never gotten a job based on someone I know or word of mouth. Weird how different it can be for people. I've even been able to switch industries without having an "in". Have I just been lucky for 20 years?

Started my job search in mid January and I'm in the same position. Its rough out there right now and I can see it getting worse month by month. I'm scared for May, June, and July. I pray that we both find something soon.

I am looking presently also and have coverage until mid-June. Working my way down my contacts. My last 30 years worth of jobs have all come from people I know. Hoping that remains the case here. Ageism is alive and well in the job market!

I have also been in GIS most of my career as a consultant/development manager. I love the technology. I really enjoy LRS and Oracle SDO work too, FWIW.

I went through the same thing as a Product owner a few years ago, during a similar downturn. Hundreds of apps, a number of interviews where they liked me but went with someone internal, or the rec got pulled etc.
I think product owner jobs are hard because there are so many differing qualities needed and different employers put their focus on different things. One might care about the technical, one might care about how much you have done in agile, or whether you have experience presenting to senior management, leadership skills, requirements writing, PMP or agile certification, whether you were cross functional or silo'd, or experience in that industry, on and on. And now might be a bit harder because the market is flooded a bit with all the other tech layoffs and people being able to work remote means all open jobs get flooded.

Ironically though, I got my current job because a head hunter found my resume on LinkedIn. But even then, unknown to me, when my name was floated there internally a few people knew me from previous jobs and vouched for me, so networking seems to always play a role.
But I have been with that company over 10 years now, and my pay has just about doubled in the time. So don't lose hope.

yeah that's the thing that's like a punch in the gut every time - i have my CSM, 6 sigma black belt, experience taking a cross platform app to market in a very competitive and niche environment - I tick all the boxes.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I was laid off a couple of times and each time I used people to get a new job. One time I put out flyers in my neighborhood (about 200 of them) I got 10 calls on my answering machine within a week. Granted they weren't the jobs I was in love with but it was money coming in the door. I worked some pretty low level stuff and worked my way up again then eventually I had had enough and bought a business.

Now I look back and it was all a blur - now a business owner that is hands on but I have it under control provides me more than I would've made in corporate world in my profession and I can take time off for the important people, my family.

I got this idea from reading the book guerrilla marketing and I realized the product was me that I was trying to sell. I was there in your shoes sending out 100's of resumes and not talking to anyone. Looking at the screen and it didn't talk back. Go talk to people about your situation, it is not embarrassing that you were let go. This happens so don't hide it. Try to hit up Aggie functions and network. Go to a convention or two in your profession. Local low cost. See if there are any mixers, dinners, happy hours for your profession.

Do not stress about this, eat well, exercise, and do some fun things. Attack this like you would your job as this is your job. Set goals for yourself of how many contacts and keep calling them because one day people will call you.
Look up every company within a 25 mile radius of your home that you think has product managers, and call them, get to know the front desk, then the executive secretary, then the people themselves, go to happy hour with them. You gotta dig deep. Attack, attack, attack.

You got this!! Believe in yourself!! Flip all the rocks over and do it now! You are the commodity you are tryin to sell! Crush it!

If you're stopping at applying to the position on LI, Indeed, etc you aren't doing enough.

Figure out the hiring manager and if you can't take a shot at who it might be and email them. It's easy to find out company email addresses. Email and follow up after 3-4 days and then follow up again a week later. Do you want that job? Go get it.

The losers apply for the position and hope for the best. You and 200 others did that. At least half paid for a spectacular resume..
