How much maternity/paternity leave does your company offer?

I'm specifically talking about paid time off.

I'll start with what I think is relatively not much, 3 days for paternity. Not sure of the specifics on maternity.

Not sure in maternity leave but we get two weeks paid as a father at my company. Company before that was 3 days. First company I ever worked for provided zero days for paternity leave. You could take days off but you were using PTO. My daughter was born on a Thursday and I was back at work Monday having used 2 days of PTO.

Maternity (giving birth): 12 weeks

My wife's company:
Paternity/adoption/etc: 12 weeks
Maternity: 12 weeks plus 6-8 week short term disability (company pays the difference between std and salary so you get full salary)

I'd be curious to know where your companies are headquartered at.

My first company out of school offered zero paternity leave, I had to use PTO when my son was born. Company was based out of Houston and as far as I know, they still don't offer any.

My second company also didn't offer any paternity leave when my youngest was born, but not too long before I left, they upped it to six weeks. I believe it had a lot to do with the company being based in Minnesota and the leadership group being very liberal. They also did their benefits nationally instead regionally, so some of it likely had to do with being competitive in some of the bluer areas they were hiring in. Also hurt us in Houston as they took away 9/80s when they acquired us because they didn't want to offer them everywhere.

My current company doesn't offer paternity, also based in Houston.

For the above post, my company is based in Houston, O&G company. This is the 4th company I've worked for, well 5 counting a merger, and the only one that has offered paternity, not sure about pervious companies' maternity policies.

My wife is with a large global IT company. So they're competing with a lot of European companies and are "behind" in benefits in comparison.

My sister lives in Austria and works for an Austrian company. She is going to try and have a baby soon and said its mandatory that everyone gets 2 year paid maternity leave. Incredible.

My company does not "give" any time.

You can take vacation/sick leave time which is earned and accrued - not given.

My company offers 16 weeks paid for both maternity and paternity leave. This is for biological births as well as adoptions. You can take it in up to 3 segments as long as you begin your last leave segment no later than the day before the child's 1st birthday for newborns or the first anniversary of the adoption being finalized.

I had a coworker whose wife also worked at the company when they had a baby. His wife took her 16 weeks of leave, then he took his 16 weeks of leave so they could avoid paying for childcare for the first 8 months of the kid's life.

That's my firm's policy. Only hurdle is a minimum of one year of tenure with the firm for eligibility. It's a solid benefit if that's your life stage.

Just this year, company started giving 4 weeks paid for maternity and paternity. Oddly enough, no more actual paid time off for maternity than paternity which is interesting. As of last year, it was zero days for paternity and 4 weeks for maternity. Anything else is either your own PTO, FMLA, etc.

Based in Florida, but office in Houston where I'm located.

That scares me. Unlimited PTO is a cop out so companies don't have to pay employees out for accrued PTO.

My wife 100% does. When you have a bank, you're more comfortable just taking days off because you have them and will lose them. She doesn't do that at all anymore. She only takes off days when she has a reason

Another potential issue is if you're required to get PTO requests approved. It's especially a different mindset because then it's their PTO as opposed to yours. Definitely a backwards cop out for a company to do this, and they know it will save them money/lost productivity that would come from folks taking PTO

My last several companies haven't paid out for pto anyway. My current company is the only one I've worked for that does. Well, the company i was at previously did but they changed the policy a month before laying off 60% of their workforce.

Ditto for the company I work for. You just have to take it before the child turns 2.

probably because the company works their people until they are grinded into the dirt. pretty easy to increase workloads so people don't feel like they can take PTO.

after 2 years, why does the company even need them back? seems like you'd have to train them all over again.

PTO and unpaid FMLA. First kid coming in two months and not excited about the situation. Company does not roll PTO either (Whose hiring). Thankfully, wife has 12 weeks.

Used a month back in February when kid was born. Will use the rest from November-January. Really looking forward to holiday season this year.

Husband got 3 days paid with my last 2 pregnancies. PTO with companies before that.

I worked for TAMU when I had my middle child (she turns 2 this year). No maternity/paternity leave, but you could apply for sick pool leave as long as you were on FMLA. The only stipulation was that you cover the first 80 hours either with PTO or take it unpaid. I ended up counting 60 of the 80 hours from various doc appointments from pregnancy. And then took 10 or 11 weeks off for maternity that got paid through sick pool.

Like 2 weeks paternity through like an FMLA type leave with an additional 2 week "child bonding leave" all @ 100%.

We have "unlimited" PTO at our company and you're right....for the most part people tend to take less time off than if they have actual allocated days off every year. When they rolled it out everybody initially thought abuse would be rampant. There are a couple of people that try to abuse it, but managers still have discretion to deny requests. But in general, people do tend to take less time off when there is "unlimited" PTO.
