My boyfriend graduates in December from UT Arlington and has taken a position with Schlumberger as a field specialist on a rig in the Gulf.

I've heard the first year can be... unpredictable, to put it nicely. Any of you wonderful Ags have experience either working off-shore or dating someone who's working offshore? I'd just like to know a little bit more about what he and I are in for!

Also, any insight into Schlumberger as a company would be great too.

Thanks and Gig 'Em!

I am retired Schlumberger. I started as a Field Engineer in Houma, LA serving the Gulf of Mexico. The first year is tough, as there is a great deal of training. The hours can be very long. I highly recommend Schlumberger. They are the best Service Company in the world. Getting offshore experience will allow him opportunities to work in a great many countries and environments.

Thanks so much for sharing - that's good to hear! We've both heard a lot of good things about the company... It sounds like the place to start.

We did long distance for a couple of years between Nashville and Dallas, so we know how the weeks apart can be.

Really good to hear about the reputation of the company. Thanks again.

I am a Field Specialist for Schlumberger, I am in Geoservices, I work both on land and offshore, it can be unpredictable at times but in my experiences working offshore there is rotation of 14 days on 14 off or 28 days on 28 off for Geoservices-Schlumberger, now if your on land there is no schedule you will be there until they tell you to go home or the job is done, sometimes training can definitely get in the way because when you come off a hitch sometimes you go straight to training for a week or longer. The benefits with Schlumberger are great and the training and experience is second to none.

I am married, not going to lie it can be hard at times, but when your away for a while you really realize how much love you have for your significant other and things are always good when your at home with them after a gig. Hope this helps.

Thanks BassAg! It sounds like you've been really happy with the job and the company - and it's always good to hear from satisfied employees.

Chris' position is also with Geoservices, and as far as we know he'll only be working offshore, shouldn't be any onshore. He's looking forward to getting out there and getting busy knocking training out. He's a quick learner and excited that he's got an opportunity to get into this industry. He's hoping to get on that 28 on/28 off rotation sooner rather than later, so hopefully his work ethic will help that happen.

Thanks again for your insight, appreciate it.

I'm a field specialist for slb. Nothing to add that hasn't been said. Stick with it, and the rewards will come. At least that's what I keep telling myself.

How come they dont post positions of specific job titles? Only way to apply is to general positions like field engineering or field specialists?

What exactly does SLB consider a "field specialist"? When you say geoservices are you talking mud logging?

GeoServices is likely a mud logger. They carry other fancy names, such as "petroleum geologists" too...

SLB doesn't seem to be hiring out my way(Permian). To be honest, the only activity of SLB's I see out here is Plug/perf or Frac'ing.

Would like to get in on their coil work.

if you have limited experience you will start as a mudlogger, then you progress into other roles, acc, data engineer, flair engineer, pore pressure engineer etc. I have just gotten news I will be traveling to Paris, France to receive training to become a Flair engineer, I am pretty excited about that. I have been only been a mudlogger/data engineer with Schlumberger for only 7 months, I guess hard work does get noticed.

Grats.

That's a gripe I have towards BHI at the moment. I haven't missed a day for the last 1.5+ years and while I've been "green lighted" to move to a specialist role, it didn't happen until I essentially put my foot down and told them that my current gig would absolutely not keep me there.

It would be nice to be approached and offered a position or training because of the effort an time I've put in.

Hello everyone,

I notice this thread is almost year old but I wanted to ask a question anyways. Can anyone explain me the difference between the Field Engineer vs Field Specialist positions? As far as:

1. Is the training different?
2. Is the actual job different?
3. Do you do the "Break out" after 5 years! as Specialist?
4. How is the compensation plan different for both? I know the base salary is low as FE but once you break you get your pay day + Job Bonus + truck allowance ... What about Field Specialist?

Please someone advise for I am in the middle of making decisions

Thank you!!

19Ag84s emoticon accurately describes just about everyone expression I remembered seeing in the office when I interviewed with them.

Geoservices is slbs mud logging company. Is he starting out as a sample catcher, logging geologist, or data engr? My assumption would be one of the first 2 as the de is typically the crew lead and has a pretty important role when it comes to pit management and well control
