Say I end up with a 3.479. Could I put 3.5 on my resume? Are there any rules/guidelines out there that say how much rounding you can get away with, if any?

when listing your GPA on a resume either list it exactly as your school shows it or round down...NEVER round up, it looks bad if your employer asks for a transcript and sees a lower GPA than you listed

A 3.479 is a 3.5 in my opinion. You have limited space on a resume, no reason to carry out the numbers that far, and proper rounding shouldn't be questioned. If you rounded the 3.479 to a 3.5 then decided that was rounded up to 4, then you might have an issue.

I would just leave it as is, but that's just me.

Except I would say most people would disagree. It's not dishonest if you make it clear how many significant digits you are using.

3.479 == 3.5
3.479 != 3.50

So, put 3.5. I PROMISE, no one will care. In fact, if you ever lose a job because someone says this practice is inaccurate, then I will pay your annual salary for the remainder of that year.

Should you round up by the a full grade point if your GPA's not that good?

Always round to the nearest 3.5

seriously, just round to one decimal place. No one lists that they have a 4.00 GPA

3.479 = 3.48 Thats the only rounding I would do. Graduating with 3.5 is graduating cum laude and they may wonder why you haven't put that as well.

3.5 in this case distinguishes 'honor' grads from others... unless you are still in school leave it as 3.48. an extra number won't kill the space on your resume.

I agree with Nasty Nate. Rounding at any other time would be appropriate in my opinion. 2.99 == 3.0, 2.46 == 2.5, etc. Except where you're going to cross a threshold that would mean something additional -
Cum Laude
Summa Cum Laude
Magna Cum Laude

Honestly, unless you're competing for a job where they're trying to sift through hundreds or thousands of candidates, using the truncate function vs. the roundup function on your GPA isn't really going to matter. And after you get some work experience, the GPA part isn't going to matter anyway. 3.4 should be sufficient to get you past the HR Drones.

I agree with 3.48 because of the 3.5=honor thing.

3.48... especially if the job requires a 3.5 min

I'm rounding my 3.65 up to a 3.7 from now on!

1.999999 = Fail
2.00000 = Pass

I say round up whenever possible!

Call the Career Center and ask them. They have specific guidelines on rounding, and they do allow rounding up.

Funny you should ask... I had a 3.479 as well and wrestled with what to put on the resume.
I asked around and most said 3.48 - so I went with that.

it seems like the only time it would be a true issue (rounding up .3 or less) is if you bump yourself up to an honor status.

my current engineering job didn't ask me for a transcript, or to see my diploma, or anything.

for all they know, i never even went to school (other than wearing my ring)

3.48

Employers that do care about GPA would look down on you for rounding it to 3.5.

Employers that don't care about GPA would read 3.479 as "3.5ish" any way.

Well, technically (again) 3.479 is in fact the same thing as 3.5 which is not cum laude. 3.50 is cum laude. The 2nd significant digit makes a difference. Again, I reiterate, that I would (and have) put 3.5 on my resume (which is rounding up). No employer has ever once mentioned anything to me about it, and out of the 5 or 6 jobs I interviewed for that requested transcripts, I got offers from like 4 of them.

AggieLawyer, I've got more downtime at work than I'd like to admit. My days are usually either 15 hours of constant work or 10 minutes of work. This week is one of the slow ones.

Is that Cum GPA? Major GPA?
You can play with what is on your resume. If your Major GPA is better than your cumulative you can use that. I kinda majored in Bonfire. So I technically failed out... so since I did, I didn't use the first year in my GPA. No one ever asked me for a transcript. 2 jobs since school, no one even looks at your GPA.

Same deal for me. Its been over a year and i never had to prove that I actually graduated form A&M. I accepted the position more than 6 months before graduation. For all they know, I could have dropped out, traveled for 6 months and then came to work!

My second job didn't ask for a GPA or transcript either. I would also say a company that gets pissed off over routine math isn't a place you'd want to be. It might be worth putting it just to test if the company or manager sucks.

I never figured out how to calulate my major gpa. I just make up it up if asked. I count what courses I want to.

OK well now I'm running into this situation. Here's the deal:

A certain company has ton's of jobs available here in Texas for engineers with 3.0 minimum GPA's that I'd love to have. I have a 2.968 currently (with grade excluding one class). Would you round up in this case to the 3.0 or just look for other jobs? I'll have a 3.0 easily by the time I graduate in May and most likely by the time the semester is over. What say you TexAgs?
PlanoAg98
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't round cause not even that would help me. I add 1 grade point. I graduated with a 2.5 but add an extra 1 point for extra curicular activities which were not depicted in my GPA. I've been out of college for almost 10 years now, so nobody is going to ask for a transcript. However, a 3.5 GPA looks much better than a 2.5 GPA.

Until you get crossways with someone and they do a thorough background check. Seems like there's been some recent high profile cases of coaches, professors, and other professionals losing their jobs over false claims on their resumes.

3.479 = 3.48.

I seriously doubt an employer is going to not hire you because of .02-.03 grade point.

Just put your actual GPA. Now a days, I don't even put mine on there since I've been out of school a while.
