Texaglandman,
The program is great. My favorite thing about it is the flexibility. You are required to take Resource Economics,Petroleum Geology, and Oil & Gas Finance. The other classes you pick and get approved by your advisor. There are lots of interesting petroleum engineering, geology, law and MBA classes available. A thesis is also required.
There are only a few of us concentrating in petroleum land management. Other students go into things like consulting and energy banking.
The majority of the students in the program are foreign, so alot of them get jobs in other countries. We just had one guy accept a job with Statoil and another accepted a job with Shell in the Hague. Let me know if you have any other questions about the program.

There are still many companies hiring new graduates for entry level inhouse positions. A lot of times you will spend time with a field broker to get acquainted with their duties and to become familiar with terminology and the entire process of going from 'prospect to pipeline'. Most PLM or EM grads I run into still learn 90% of what they will eventually learn by experiencing on the job training and by working with an experienced field landman. As far as the work being steady, the industry has some vicious cycles and so you will see very good time along with some very poor times. It all depends upon who your employer is at the time the industry takes a dive. Good luck with your search, it can be a very rewarding career if you decide you like it and get involved with the right people.

do you know any specific companies looking to hire new grads? of the few landman jobs i've seen posted, most of them require at least 2 years of experience. i've heard it's a tough business to break into...i'm still optimistic though.

I'm also looking into becoming a landman, but am having trouble finding out how to break into the business. I'd like to find a position in Houston and wondered if anybody had any suggestions.
