And are about to graduate?

In 2005, I had a 3.72 GPA in high school and a 1220 SAT (much higher than A&M avg.)
I also had a very strong application.
All of my friends got in with lower scores and grades. I was rejected. I was so angered and depressed that I almost went to tech. Thank god I didn't.

A year and a half later I transfered in. I am now about to graduate from the business school with a 3.3 GPA.

Top this day it still baffles me why I did not get in the first time. Anybody here work for admisssions and can enlighten me on how you guys do things?

I know it doesn't matter now as I am an Aggie, but I have always wondered......

what was the major you applied for when you first applied?

Political Science...I thought it would be easier to get into liberal arts.

lol, wow. I think there is much more to this story. Poli Sci is the easiest if not one of them to get into??

Either way, just count your blessings that you will be an Aggie for life and not a tard.

The bottom line is you will be able to find a job much easier especially during times like this.

There is no way of knowing why a student does not get in as a freshmen applicant. If a student is in the review process all aspects of the application process are considered (class rank, SAT/ACT test score, course work taken in high school, essays, letters of rec., academic association, and involvement outside of classroom). With all that there is, no ways to pin point a specific reason why a freshmen applicant didn't get in. The review process at Texas A&M is a competitive process that involves many factors.

In addition, everybody please note that in freshmen admissions choice of major does not play a role in the admissions process. You are admitted in to the University and then filled in to your choice of majors based on room available.

Thanks for the response. It was just on my mind and has always bugged me. Especially after seeing that the acceptance rate is 76% or so. Im just going to go with the theory that the person looking at my app thought he was working at Harvard not A&M. Anyhow doesn't matter now...

1220 SAT (much higher than A&M avg.)

I wouldn't say that is much higher than the average. A few years ago, the average was 1200, but I've heard that it's gone up a bit since then.

Also, that 1200 average is brought down by the top 10% kids that score 900s and athletes that get in with low SAT scores. If you take out the top 10 kids with low scores and athletes, the average for everyone else is probably 1220 or above.

WaltonLoads08,

Your class rank did you in. Either way, why worry about it?

It was much higher than the avg. The sat is now out of 2400 i believe? Then it was out of 1600. Either way I don't care now. We all know top 10% rule is bad

Your SAT score isnt "way" above A&M's average, its 40 points above. And since you weren't in the top 10%, it was incumbent on you to beat the average by a more comfortable margin if you wanted to be 100% sure you'd get in.

I got Blinn Team and graduated in December. Took them less than a year to admit me full time to A&M.

Applied and accepted to both t.u. and A&M on the first try.

A few years ago I saw a report run out of the A&M database that had the average at 1200 out of 1600.

1. you're correct. we punish students from high-achieving high schools.

2. Why worry about anything? The fact is, our system does not judge all our students on a merit basis.
Dad
How long do you want to ignore this user?
WaltonLoads08, you are right. If I ran the state, I'd get rid of the top 10 percent rule and people like you would get in.

The SAT is not perfect, but it's the best thing we have to kids from different schools. Outside of stud athletes which are not here for school, I don't think people with sub 1,000 SAT scores should get in to A&M.

saxxey,
so any kid applying as an ag major would also be accepted as a business major into mays? that doesn't make sense to me, is there any further expaination? and how do they decide who gets into their major?
BlueAg2003
How long do you want to ignore this user?
lilHtown- At A&M it is about timing rather than specific qualifications to get into majors. As long as a major has open spots, if someone is admitted, they'll be given their first choice. Mays, Dwight Look College of Engineering, and the College of Architecture usually fill up by Dec. 1. Mays is no more competitive in terms of class rank/test scores/etc. than the College of Ag and Life Sciences. It is just very popular and fills up with automatic admits quickly.

The only college currently with an academic requirement is the Dwight Look College of Engineering. They require a minimum 550 on the math portion of the SAT. And that is mainly to make sure students can handle the rigorous math courses they will encounter.

I was denied and did blinn team. My SAT score was not quite on par with some of yalls 1200s, but a 3.7 gpa, top 15%

Looking back on it now, I think not getting in from the start was the best thing that could have happened to me. I had to work my butt off to get to where i am and i appreciate it a heck of a lot more than some people might.... PPA group 17 and on my internship right now. I am damn proud to be an aggie...glad i didnt give up and head elsewhere.

I didn't get denied, but I didn't get into the business school and was put in general studies (second choice). Worked hard my first two years and made PPA. About to finish up my masters this semester.

Classes were a lot more entertaining in general studies when I could watch to see which athletes made it to class and which ones just showed up for tests

De facto though, only 10%ers and people with 1300+ SATs are getting into Mays. Review applicants wont get their first choice if they put Mays.

Rejected my first try with a 3.50/1180 SAT class of 800 seniors.

Got into Mays with a 3.30 from Houston Community College my sophomore year.

3.61 GPA since I've been here...weird.

Or it could be that the high school is really easy and everyone has good grades. No way to know just looking at the numbers.
