Can someone explain why taking AP courses helps your GPA? I didn't go to high school in Texas, but a couple when I was in hs. Don't think it did anything for my GPA though. Just looked good on my application.
My school calculated GPA on a 100 Point Scale
AP Classes would get at 1.21 Factor
Honors Classes would get a 1.1 Factor
Everything else gets a 1.0 (or no factor)
If my schedule was the following
History AP
English AP
Calculus AP
Physical Education
Chemistry Honors
Health
Music
And I made 100's in all of them
History AP = 100*1.21 = 121
English AP = 100*1.21 = 121
Calculus AP = 100*1.21 = 121
Physical Education = 100*1.0 = 100
Chemistry Honors = 100*1.1 = 110
Health = 100*1.0= 100
Music = 100*1.0= 100
Add them up and divide by the number of classes
773 Points / 7 Classes = 110.43 GPA
It doesn't really matter what your GPA is in the end since colleges care about your class rank since every high school has a different system. The extra weight given to the AP classes can help you overtake another student who only takes Honors level courses though
