Have always loved Rubio, even when he wasn't en vogue around here.

His biggest hurdle won't be beating a Democrat, it will be winning over the MAGA voter who is skeptical of anything spoken eloquently.

That's just not true. Trump hit a spot with a lot of frustrated people with his very direct speech. Don't underestimate MAGA. MAGA are just conservatives who have been awakened to the bull**** corruption of the democrat party.

Sums it up pretty well:

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/restoring-america/patriotism-unity/4758206/rubio-athens-speech-stops-washington-cold/

Quote:

As many have noted, there appears to be less policy daylight between Vance and Rubio than is commonly thought. Rubio's Acropolis speech embraced nationalism as unapologetically as anything Vance has said, lamenting that "'nationalism' became a dirty word" and declaring that the United States has chosen "the unapologetic pursuit of national power."

The true contrast between the two, should a contest take shape, would be aesthetic. Rubio never deviates from his presentation as the classical statesman, favoring lyricism and the long arc of history.

Vance is a creature of the moment, mixing it up online and most energized when he's picking a fight, as when he told a Lakeland, Florida, rally this month that Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon should "get the hell out of here" for calling herself a socialist.

Rubio soars where Vance brawls.

And for a party looking to consolidate its gains among minority and working-class voters, the messenger may ultimately matter just as much as the message.

They would be an unstoppable combo ticket.

MAGA is. cult of personality. They'll vote for whoever Trump endorses.

The better question is whether or not Trump is dumb enough to endorse someone in the primaries, but I think he'd do it if he thought it could impact his legacy.

He's not going to endorse the person that's more likely to win the election. He'll either endorse the person already likely to win the primary or the person that is most likely to bolster himself. Neither of those is an optimal strategy.

But unlike other modern presidents, I don't think Trump is going to ride off into the sunset or become a man behind the curtain. He's going to want to stay front and center for as long as possible, and he'll endorse a candidate who he thinks will be deferential to him.

This election cycle is already a referendum on Trump. If it ends poorly, the last thing we need is another one two years from now.

Yes and no. Obama stumps for post-primary candidates, but generally doesn't pick candidates in competitive races, including Biden in the last election. Trump consistently picks candidates based mostly on who will back him up.

Obama just pushes his choices behind the scenes and has the next Democrat cabinet over to his home on a regular basis a few blocks from the White House.

. Never said they were or weren't. Just discussing the impact on elections. If you have a low approval rating, staying in the shadows seems prudent.

Rubio wasn't done at the Acropolis. He had some other things to set straight at the airport.

Rubio is a better pick than Vance.

Vance is divisive. Rubio has the ability to unite people.

Rubio would easily win the presidency. Vance could easily lose.

If the Republicans are smart, they will put Rubio at the head of the ticket.

But who am I kidding... The Republicans can f up a wet dream

Rubio is so freaking articulate and direct. He really looks and acts like a leader and a uniter.

He wins against ANY dem in a landslide.

And he's extremely likable. Not sure I can say the same for JD, although I have no problem with him

I like Vance, even though I don't fully trust or agree with him.

But completely agree. Rubio wins in a landslide if he runs.

Agreed. But the smart play for Rubio is to let Vance run in 28, watch Vance lose, then run in 32.

I think Republicans lose the next cycle, regardless. Too much Dem motivation against the current administration.

I'm not going to say it's fait accompli…but it's pretty damn close.

Unless the Dems run AOC…then all bets are off.

Not unless they run a true, actual, real life centrist.

If they run any of the people they're talking about right now, they will lose to Mickey mouse.

A nationwide election for the presidency is not the same thing as statewide or local elections.

There's a reason all Democrats tack to the center after they've won their primary...

The next election will be a referendum on any Republican who enabled Trump. If you looked the other way every time he did something stupid, unethical, or flat out illegal, your next election will be about that.

FWIW compare the messaging of Rubio vs Vance. I like a lot about Vance but he is like Trump in terms of not really understanding history and government at a fundamental level like Rubio or DeSantis. Trump/Vance are more true populists that are bulls in the china shop in terms of their intellectual understanding of how we got here and what the solutions are by comparison.
