Applicant for a "paid" position with fire department rejected because his diploma shows he graduated from home school, which in Nebraska are not accredited.

The fire department has since changed the applicant requirements to include "graduated from an accredited high school". The city claimed that "high school diploma" implied graduated from an "accredited" high school was what they expected. Really?

There are other ways of determining if an applicant is qualified; I would say MOST home schoolers receive an education that is at least as good as public school educations. And this guys is already a volunteer fire fighter and a licensed EMT. I kind of wonder if he's angered someone.

So they adhered to the policy they set? Sorry, but this is a nothing burger. If he didn't participate in a homeschool association then how does anyone know he is competent to write reports or knows enough about civics to effectuate his job?

It's more of a socialization thing for fire departments. As a rookie, applicants need to be able to handle light hazing their first year, and the rookies can't be smarter than other members of the fire house!

He was not in public school so we know for sure he knows how to write.

and

How do they know anyone is competent?

Home school doesn't mean non accredited automatically. This applicant's parents chose to use a non accredited program for home schooling, theyve chosen not to also get a GED for equivalence.

This is a really well known thing in the homeschooling world..

There's homeschooling done well and homeschooling done poorly. Need more information to clarify this one.

Take the Duggar family for example. A lot of their homeschooling was just the older kids teaching the younger kids and the girls especially probably have the equivalent of a 7th or 8th grade education.

What is the issue. Home school not accredited in NE then take the GED. He should pass with flying colors.

No, they did not have a policy. The policy just said you had to be a high school graduate. It didn't say you had to be a high school graduate of an accredited high school.

FTR, the article I posted explicitly states that in Nebraska homeschool is considered a non-accredited form of education. So according to the article, in Nebraska, the state that this guy was applying for a job in and graduated from homeschool, a homeschool diploma is a non-accredited diploma. I will add that I understand that most journalist these days are idiots and can't write an accurate, factual news story to save their lives.

Quote:

Coates applied to the Fremont Fire Department to further that goal, but the city rejected his application because his high school diploma indicated he was homeschooled, which is an unaccredited form of education in Nebraska.

Because public, private and homeschool associations have standards that young adults need to meet. Not high standards, but surely someone who was homeschooled well should be able to pass the ged... Right? Or should he get an exception, because he is white with male organs, like a lot of posters seems to believe?

You're using the public school system as evidence for that argument?

Insert the articles about how many students in the California University system have to take remedial math thanks to their stellar public high school education.

Homeschooling is what you make of it. But, I can tell you that the many homeschool graduates I've known are an exceptional group of people as a whole. For example, there is a 22 year old who just graduated from Patrick Henry College who is managing a state senate campaign here in Arkansas this fall. Even the ones that I know of who may not be Rhodes Scholar material are well-adjusted for adult life and being positive contributors to society. Let's face it--most opposition to homeschooling is because some people are resentful that the public schools don't get to sink their hooks into all children.

In reality this is a story about someone upset because the think the rules don't apply to them with the whole accreditation thing. It sounds like they had several avenues (homeschool association, GED) but chose not to. I am guessing any university in Nebraska would reject him as well. It has nothing to do with the quality of education (though I question that in this case) from home school.

I agree with you about meeting some great home school kids, just as I have met great public and private school kids. To me home school has a PR problem. The great students go on to be successful and nobody knows or in reality cares how they got their high school education. What the public sees are people like this kid and the Duggars.

You serious Clark? How cognitively difficult is it to work at the fire department?

Am I also a racist?

The fact that a high school graduate can work there - and the standards for graduating from HS now are extremely low - tells me the bar is pretty low. The standards have also been dumbed down because of DEI.

That depends on if you want a fire department that puts out the fire or you want a fire department that just leaves slabs.

Individuals who are hired for senior-level positions typically experience what I refer to as the pile A and pile B screening process.

Frequently, the position attracts a substantial volume of applicants. The position specification will incorporate a requirement such as "must possess an advanced degree in _____". This requirement transitions the candidate from pile A to pile B. Additional requirements are incorporated to advance the candidate through the classification system. At a certain point, a manageable collection is established and comprehensive evaluation commences.

This is the rationale for the requirement in this application: "must hold an accredited high school diploma".

I don't think the city's HR director thought this through if the article is right. Why would accreditation be implied if it's not implied for most other jobs or colleges, and which accreditations from which accrediting bodies are implied? It sounds to me at least like they really did move the goalposts.

If your state recognizes parents' authority to sign and issue high school diplomas (all of them do), and they followed all the laws with regard to homeschooling their children, you can't act like it's really obvious that we MEANT you must have received your diploma from an accredited institution. At most they should have asked for a transcript detailing his coursework, which he should be able to produce.

Relatives live in Nebraska and almost did the same thing with one of their kids. That kid is now living with us in another state to get a real high school diploma. Almost ended up in the same train wreck!
