I wonder if we should bring back billy clubs and give officers more latitude to use them without consequences., since the alternative to getting beat with a club is to be shot dead. I would think that 8 able-bodies officers with billy clubs would have no problem subduing this woman without having to shoot her. Seems like tasers may not be as effective as we'd hoped. I would think that both the victims and the cops would go for that scenario since both sides would rather not have people getting shot. I know I'd rather have big bump on my head than be dead.

why not tackle her/pull her down from behind in this case? Why didn't someone try that? I'm ok with her being gone, but I would probably have done that first.
So for both responses, can you provide your sliding scale of options for police they need to flip through based on the situation?
Come on, cop feels his life is threatened or someone in public is threatened, then said cop gets to use lethal force until threat is neutralized. End of story.
Sure, my post was more of a "support for billy clubs" and officer discretion post. But I'm just saying that if I was an officer, and a big fat tub of lard woman is waddling toward me with two knives, and I have a billy club, and I won't be punished for beating the crap out of her to try to save her life, I'd be comfortable using the club to knock the knives out of her hands or knock her upside the head. And I'm not in as good a shape as those officers.
Now that being said, almost any dude with a knife, I'm shooting. An athletic-looking woman, I'm probably shooting. Kids, really tiny women, and fat tubs of lard probably get preferential treatment in my mind as I see them as less of a threat and would be willing to confront them and defend myself with a club against their knife.
Seems to me like a lot of officers are afraid to use non-deadly force because the media will go after them harder for beating someone up than for shooting and killing them. I have a problem with that. I want the officers to have wide latitude to address a problem without consequences if it avoids shooting someone. I think they should be praised when they do accomplish that. I don't think officers have that latitude right now.
