President Donald Trump said he's ordered U.S. flags to be lowered across the country in honor of the late iconic country music star Dolly Parton, who died at 80 years old.

Trump, in a Truth Social post shortly after Parton's death was announced, said he directed American flags to be lowered for the next week beginning at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 25.

Honestly, this is just ridiculous. This trend of constantly putting flags at half mast any time a government official or politician died was bad enough without now doing it when celebrities die.

Just leave the flags at half mast year round at this point.

I agree on the overall sentiment here. It's become largely meaningless but if we were going to do it for a celebrity, then she's about the best candidate for it you can find.

I'd rather lower the flags to half mast for Dolly, than almost any politician alive.

I bet you're fun at parties.

Given the fact it has been done for well over a decade now, the precedent was set a long time ago.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Dolly was a fantastic person, almost universally loved. Which is why most of us won't kick up a public fuss over this.

But I agree, the flag thing has gotten out of hand. This is not a pro or anti any politician statement. This is one of the few issues where both sides truly are at fault.

It started with 'school shootings', and has progressed to celebrity honors.

I believe the flag code has specific guidelines as to who is honored, and how for long. We need to go back to that.

Of all things in this FU world to get "dusted up" about, this is about as low on the scale as one could get IMHO. You must live in a utopian universe for this to make the cut.

Not my preference on using the half staff honor, but I'm ok with it.

It's good to have one thing almost the whole country can stack hands on and paying her respects and remembering her fondly seems to be the only thing that qualifies in the past ten years.

Dolly was a kind, generous and authentic person while she also supported BLM and the LBGTQ alphabet mafia. She publicly denounced her Southern heritage by removing the word "Dixie" from all of her business venues. Dolly is a perfect example of "two things can be true". I hope that she rests in peace and that all of her woke political organizations die---soon.

I can't say if Dolly was worthy or not, as much as one can admire a celebrity that was universally loved across generations and cultures. In my life time I can only think of Mr Rogers, and I don't remember if the same thing was done.

This reminds me of Ron Swanson's selective exception when Lil Sebastian died.

While I agree and could really care less about this topic...

Since this is the politics forum I'll just say that this is how progressivism works. You start off changing the rules for small stuff - flags, "no child left behind", etc that all "sound like the right thing to do". But as those things get normalized the rules continue to diverge from their original intent. This happens with so many things its pretty much unavoidable as part of being human. The best we can do is be conscious of it, and realize what we lose by changing things "for the better".
