I said this the day after the Trump election that Thomas should be submitting his resignation letter the same day.

we are really going to get Ginsburged by a guy who claims he loves conservatism.

how much longer does he think the Republican party will have a President and a Senate to install a conservative replacement?!!

Clarence Thomas today is SEVENTY SEVEN YEARS OLD.

the median life expectancy of an American male: SEVENTY SEVEN

If he retires, it will not be until the current Supreme Court term is over.

If he left right now, his vote on any case that hasn't been decided would be moot.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

It's a risk both ways. Thomas is the GOAT, and if we get another Roberts in his place, we'll wish we had waited.

Thomas retiring today, tomorrow, next year does not guarantee anything other than the most conservative voice in the history of the Court is no longer on the Court.

He should continue to push conservative ideals though his legal opinions for as long as he damn well pleases!

And its interesting that the OP does not share this same desire for Alito to retire, who is only one year younger

I would say that anyone nominated by the current GOP is likely to be more conservative than, for example, Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Or are you questioning whether or not CT is conservative?

It is difficult to make out what you are trying to insinuate here.

Agreed, but you have to be strategic about it as well. RBG was a darling of the left but she refused to retire and it burned the dems. The same could happen here. If a dem wins in 2 years we're ****ed.

I'm pretty sure if the Dems win the senate this fall, Trump won't get another vote on any SC nominee

Incorrect, per any actuarial table: A 77-year-old male has a median remaining life expectancy of roughly 8.5 to 9 years, meaning he is expected to live to approximately 85 or 86 years old

Thank GOD and Donald John Trump it is not the conservative folks want it to be.

Conservative is a meaningless word these days. To be honest, it is more relatable to far-right extremism than it is to core GOP values.

Considering Trump played a part in making "conservative" meaningless, I don't think that's a good thing

If you wanted permanent DNC rule then it's not a good thing. Because that's where the Country was headed.

Trump disrupted that and saved us from it. For that, he gets some leeway in remaking the GOP.

you are deciding to use a different metric.

I read somewhere he's less than a year away from being the longest serving SC justice in history, and given what he went through during his confirmation, that may be the middle finger he's going for.

Thats not how life expectancy works. There is no point using a total population life expectancy for someone who has already survived infant mortality, 60 years of driving, and multiple bar fights in their 20s.

By the time you reach age 78, the median life expectancy increases to 88ish.

I advise quitting while you're behind...

If he retires before Trump leaves, I hope Trump asks Thomas for his short list to replace him. But I suspect Trump thinks he knows best and doesn't need the help.

Then you do not know Thomas. You should watch his movie. The man is clearly not motivated by power, grift and influence. He'd rather be RVing around the country with his wife but continues to serve out of a sense of duty.

Except you're using numbers for a baby just born.
