Sorry, $5 to $10M in net worth doesnt equal cash flow....It goes away quick unless you live in a small house with no luxury expenditures....

What do you define as "luxury expenses"? $10M is plenty to live on the interest and enjoy a damn good life with trips, nice cars, eating out regularly.

I for years kept a fortune in my wallet I go out of a cookie. "As the wallet grows so do the needs". It's simple, but it's a reminder that people tend to spend more when they have more and rarely delay gratification when they can / should.

If folks wanted to point to one thing that seems lost after Gen X it's the concept of delayed gratification. Gen Z, Millennials and the like channel their Violet Beauregardeness when approaching life.

All I know is I always had a goal in mind of when I would be able to quit my job. I reached it a few years ago, but by that time it was not nearly enough. I then made a new goal and am getting closer, but even that will probably not be enough.

being born in 1970 and graduating law school in 1997 I did the exact same thing.

becoming a "millionaire" seemed like a fairy tale and I would quit my job as soon as I passed the threshold.

that was 3 years ago and I am still saving for retirement.

I can't imagine anyone retiring early (before 62) without having at least 2 million dollars in savings stored up.

Lots of different ways to get there. No one size fits all.

Money is important, but it's not everything.

If you're poor and happy, you're a blessed man.

If you're rich and lonely, you're a wretched soul.

Lots of ifs and buts. These things are usually said by lolpoors to cope.

I'd rather be rich than poor. A rich person ismore likely to be happy and remain happy than a poor person.

Thanks to God, I am doing aight.

No ifs and buts here. Blessed by God with a wonderful wife, three amazing children, the means to support them, and a robust retirement on the horizon.

My post wasn't quoted in response to yours.

It's very sad you feel a need to elevate yourself by taking shots at people you perceive as poor. I hope you solve what makes you feel so inadequate that prompts you to brag about money. Good luck!

You are bragging about your "wonderful wife" and "amazing kids". Maybe you should take your own advice? Why are you laughing at people who may not have a wife or no kids?

Where did I laugh at people with no wife or kids?

You try to connect a lot of dots that don't make sense... me poor, lol. me laughing at unmarried or childless people, lol. All CEOs are evil, lol.

I appreciate the humor you bring to this board. Thank you.

I was poor at one point in life. I am trying to help people get richer so they have a comfortable life. Too many people trust corporations and their jobs and think they are taken care of. And that applies to my real-life friends also. Things have changed a lot in the last 15 years.

I love your inability to read and comprehend people's posts. Good comedy, we need that in this miserable world.

I try to include Taco Bell (or Del Taco if I'm in CA/NV) in my meal plan at least once a week even though I can afford Freebirds or Chipotle now. Of course there's no 69 cent value menu anymore.

So you find it's good "clean out the system", so to speak?

I just had a very clean colonoscopy last month so I think the strategy is effective.

One interesting stat might be "Net worth aside from primary residence and tax-deferred retirement savings".

That would give you a clear picture of "excess" disposable wealth.

Liquidity

I've got a boatload of "wealth" that I can't access - RSUs, retirement accounts, etc.
I might look good on paper but I don't have that much green spendable relative to the value of those items.

Does this count value of home ownership? If so, almost meaningless anymore. A decent home is at least $500K now.

Only counts towards "net worth" if it's paid for. Whatever you owe to the bank, takes away from your net worth.

No issue with my reading comprehension. Your words. Own them.

We use lolpoors a lot on TexAgs. How old are you? I thought you were at least 40+. Not everything said is meant to be taken literally on boards like this which also have a humor component to it.

Just do a search on lolpoor and you will see it being used a lot on here. No one is laughing at poor people. I am the one who always says that people like Homeless Steve should NOT be taxed as the poor dude needs whatever dollars he can collect to eat at McD or TacoBell. Why should the govt tax him??

I am among those posters here who has empathy for the poor and want laws to reflect that. Not this fake "free market capitalist" society we have which is nothing but a way to keep the poor poorer and Elon Musk richer.

I have escaped this trap. All on my own. Am mighty proud of it too. If you have as well, please accept my congratulations.

Does that mean, for your own company (self employment), that you are the highest ranking decision making authority in your company?

Yes, it is "net worth" which means everything. So if your house is $500k and you put down $100k, you add equity of 400k

Who starred this crap? If you buy a $500k home and finance $400k, then you have only $100k of equity in that house…not $400k. Anyone following your career/investment advice is going to be shocked when they retire.

No kidding! I'd be pretty miserable if all I worried about was making money.

If you have $1 million, and are happy with your life, why would you care how many other Americans are also millionaires?

It seems like too many are not chasing their own happiness, but chasing what others have. Explains a lot of the jealousy.

How did you figure that people who are successful making money is all that they do? Maybe they are smart enough to play golf over the weekends, travel, spend time with the family, AND make money.

Yeah but they are also likely evil CEO's who hire H-1B workers and thus we should be clinically jealous of them and doubt any good trait in them. Or better yet we should criticize those CEOs but be more than happy to invest in their companies and make money off their hard work and decisions all the while missing the hypocrisy

It would be one of the peasant class that likely died on the Titanic. Does that help?
