At this point I would hand the government over to a power-share between Buc-ee's, Costco, and In-n-Out.

Add Chik-Fil-A and Waffle House and I'm in.

ETA: Maybe HEB. They are also great in a disaster.

Imagine if Buccees ran an airline. Clean batherooms, fast and friendly service, affordable prices, no sleazy truckers/industrial customers/pax, old skymall-style magazines with easy ordering of their merchandise etc. What a market opportunity!

Terry Blacks in Lockhart. No gas pumps and average restrooms.

is the one in Lockhart "Blacks" and "Terry Blacks" in Austin? Falling out between the family? Lockhart is known for families in the BBQ biz having disagrements over the years.

Confused.

I used to live / own practices in Caldwell County. The owner's of Smitty's and Luling's City Market were clients of mine. Buddy Ellis (City Market) was truly one of a kind.

Terry Black's in Lockhart is my go to. I stop there weekly. He's got locations in Austin, Dallas, Waco, Ft. Worth and Lockhart. They will be in Nashville soon.

Here's a good read for the history of the feud.

It is the best place to stop on a trip but their customer service on the food side sucks.

I asked them if they would sell us the BBQ sandwich without the bun since one of our kids is gluten intolerant. We'd still pay the full price as a regular sandwich. I just wanted them to put the meat in a wrapper instead of a bun. They flat out refused to do it.

They should not have done that because a "bunless" sandwich is part of the SOPs.

I will say, however, the guys upstairs were insanely strict on customization. One night Corey Feldman came into the Katy store after his band had played a gig at that one hole in the wall venue in Katy. Corey wanted lettuce and tomato from behind the counter to go with his boiled eggs to make an egg sandwich. We had to tell him it was against company policy and he started laying the "do you know who I am?!?" card.

He stormed out and some of the roadies came in and were like "guys he's pissed and he's going to call the corporate office."

We just told them "please go report to our bosses that we did exactly what they tell us to do."

I remember their big thing when they started was clean restrooms, and plenty of them. Seems like a great way to start.

Their other big thing in Surfside was to hire pretty girls for that were sweet to the plant workers in Lake Jackson plus, cheap ice and "half price" swimsuits for the last minute Surfside visits. IYKYK.

Funny story, when I met my now husband, he lived in Surfside and worked at BASF in LJ. When he proposed he took me to a nice restaurant in Lake Jackson, Cafe Anais at the time, then drove me down to the beach to propose. It was a new moon and so dark that night, I accepted the proposal but couldn't even see the ring! The first time I got a really good look at it was in the Buc-ee's bathroom! He did well though.

Flash forward 20 years, we have a beach house for our family right about on that same beach he proposed on, and we're here this weekend. A wonderful, windy, cool gift of a beach weekend.

The public has spoken about Buc-ees, and the answer is a resounding yes. Been 100s of times to multiple locations, and the stores are packed.

Huge fan of Buccees. My only complaint is they don't have Coke Zero in the fountain.

They don't sell lottery tickets, this keeps the checkout lines moving. No customers stalling while deciding on which scratch off to purchase.

Never noticed that before. Standing behind a scratch off connoisseur at a gas station counter is annoying.

Has anyone actually seen one of the tortilla machines churning out tortillas in a Buc-ee's yet? I've been in 3 stores that have one and yet to see one tortilla. Are they still interviewing everyone's Tia?

It's so obvious this is the way you should do business. But greed, ego, and bad management end up tanking many companies and public orgs as well.

From '85-'87 I worked in Clute but commuted from the Houston area. I would stop at the original Buc-ee's all the time on the way home for what used to be known as "road pops" -- iced down cans of beer handed to you in a brown paper bag.

No big deal back then. It was legal, and there was rarely much traffic on 288 headed out of LJ.

When Buc-ee's got really big, I was shocked to realize that little store was the start of it all. Seems like I went 20 years or so without ever hearing about it.

Depends on where you put them in your body.

My daughter has worked for HEB corporate for about 12 years. Their disaster relief is second to none. FWIW, I know for a fact Samaritan's Purse has worked with HEB to hone their disaster relief skills. That should tell you how great HEB is in that area.

I had a friend Kurt that was friends with Aplin in college. They were both class of 80 building construction

Aplin offered Kurt a chance to start the business with him, and Kurt decided he would just rather build homes lol

Kurt passed away in 2014 but he used to share that story with us all the time
