The Bidens were an even greater example of that, but Kimmel ignored that joke for an entire term and only used it on the guy who was shot 2 years ago. I'm sure his motive was pure like you said. Right.

73 you're an embarrassment

Just looking up facts that many here refuse to do and if I'm an embarrassment to you, you make my day.
Then back up your claim about why you think "13th most popular show on ABC and 54th overall on TV" is the bar for being highly rated in the current market?

And because of that, even natural mortality, is somehow to be fodder for comedy?

From Grok on the profitability of the late night shows:

Quote:

None of the three major network late-night shows are major profit centers like they once were, due to sharply declining linear TV ad revenue (industry-wide drop from ~$439 million in 2018 to ~$221 million in 2024 for the category), high production costs (budgets often $100120 million+ per season, large staffs of 200250 people, and host salaries of ~$1518 million), and viewers shifting to YouTube clips/streaming.

Here's the clearest picture from 2025 reporting by people familiar with the finances (around the time of Colbert's cancellation announcement):

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS/Paramount)

Does not generate a profit it was losing roughly $4050 million per year.
Budget exceeded $100 million per season, with ad revenue estimated around $5760 million.
CBS explicitly cited these "punishing losses" (and the challenging late-night economics) as the reason for ending the show after the 20252026 season, despite it leading in total viewers.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC/Disney)

Does generate a profit overall for the network, according to multiple people familiar with ABC/Disney's accounting. It loses money when measured strictly against traditional TV advertising revenue (ad revenue around $70 million in some periods, with high costs for ~250 staff and host salary ~$16 million). However, it becomes profitable when including YouTube/digital revenue (often the highest among late-night shows), affiliate carriage fees, sponsorships, internal promotions for ABC programming, and brand synergies. Disney insiders have described it as a "moneymaker" despite the linear TV headwinds.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (NBC)

Does not clearly generate a standalone profit (or is at best marginal/strategic).
Fallon's show brings in the highest ad revenue of the three (~$7880 million recently, though down significantly year-over-year).
It is part of NBC's broader late-night suite (Tonight Show + Late Night with Seth Meyers + SNL) that loses more than $100 million per year based on traditional TV advertising costs.
The suite becomes "more profitable" when factoring in streaming and digital revenue, but NBC has still implemented cost cuts (e.g., moving to four nights a week in some periods). Fallon has the strongest YouTube presence (~32 million subscribers) and brand extensions, which help, but no sources describe the show itself as a clear net profit generator.

Bottom line: Colbert's show was the clear money-loser and paid the price. Kimmel's is the one most consistently described by network insiders as profitable for its parent company once all revenue streams are included. Fallon's generates the most ad dollars but sits in a larger unprofitable linear-TV bucket at NBC. All three rely heavily on non-traditional value (digital clips, branding, lead-ins) to justify their existence in 2026's fractured media landscape pure "TV profit" is rare. Data is from 2025 (latest detailed insider reporting); exact per-show P&Ls are not publicly disclosed.

Thank God for those synergies, huh, Jimmy?

Easy, the top 50 are SUPER highly rated. #54 is still pretty high, I mean, right guys?

Kimmel (a comedian) is vile for cracking a joke about an old man (that has zero to do with the events that unfolded Saturday night). Trump (the President) is not for rejoicing in someone's death.

Got it.

It doesn't matter if it's profitable right now. If Nexstar and Sinclair decide they aren't going to air it again Kimmel is toast. Really hoping that happens. Pressure needs to be on them and their advertisers.

Totally non-partisan late night funny man.

Who can forget all those jokes made about the lifeless husk that was Joe Biden walking around trying to shake hands with the unknown soldier?

And wasn't Kimmel the one who coined the term Bathhouse Barry?

So Kimmel (a comedian) sat on that joke for 4 years with old man Biden and Jill in the White House and only chose to use it on a woman whose husband was shot less than 2 years ago which everyone in the country is well aware of. The same "comedian" who also tried to use Charlie Kirk's brutal murder as a punchline for insinuating that Trump voters had something to do with it.

Yeah, just a nice guy with zero agenda making a light-hearted joke. Perfectly acceptable. Trump is the real meanie.

Biden was the elephant in the room they rarely referred to. They acted like Trump was still President with the amount of material they dedicated to him. It was like Biden didn't even exist. They certainly never went after Biden's cognitive abilities or insinuated Jill was close to being a widow. They pulled their punches.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone were glaringly obvious in their refusal to make fun of Biden, which sucks to say as generally a big fan of their work.

I'm pretty sure he is the only President in the history of their show they almost completely ignored.

Fallon did more than Colbert and Kimmel but it wasn't regular and not nearly as often as Trump, even after Trump was no longer President.

I saw a story a while back that referenced Fallon admitting that he lost a significant portion of his audience because of Trump supporters tuning out. It's a shame, because he was the most talented of the late night hosts with a very light hearted approach - until he touched Trump's hair and was accused of being too friendly. Then his monologues changed.

Money talks.

They got a massive deal with Paramount.

Fallon was mostly silly with his political humor until he played with Trump's hair and his network got offended.

Most of them are politically to the left, but I think industry money and pressure influence their moves more than anything else.

Leno was wise to get out when he did. He wasn't conservative, but he would have been portrayed to be in the current climate.

lol. I laughed. But….

Yeah, this is F16. I don't think this crowd does comedy.

And Kimmel, as a comedian, shouldn't have a boundary. I don't know if it's worse that people wait for this guy to say something so they can post about it or if it's worse that this guy lives in everyone's head rent free.
Neither one of you understood the joke. Trump could be 50 and he'd still make the same joke, because it's not a joke about him being old. It's a joke about her wanting him dead, because the perception is she married for money and hates him and wants out of the marriage.

Expectant means eagerly anticipating. An expectant widow is a person eagerly awaiting the death of their spouse. It's a joke about Kimmel sharing that sentiment.
