Speaking as somebody who vacationed in the Gulf last year, there are things I can get away with as a large male, in a country like Saudi Arabia or the UAE where things are relatively safe. But I wouldn't try those things in a s/hole country like Iraq.

I have no idea, but my sister-in-law and her two daughters got all giddy when they voted for some muslim out in Virginia a few years back. All they could talk about was how proud they were for supporting this candidate (a muslim female if memory serves me). They didn't support the candidate's policies or achievements (if any), they supported him or her because of their "religion." I said they must have had ancestors in France in 1944 who got their head shaved. Haven't spoken much since.

Women can get spit on or worse for not covering their hair in many Muslim locales, whether you're a westerner or not. Certainly there are some times when it's performative but more frequently it's just what you gotta do. When I was in Riyadh the women were all told to cover their hair except when on the compound or in private.
This woman appears not to have been exercising enough caution in trying to do her job in a dangerous place, but I'm not sure why the responses to an American woman being kidnapped on here are what they are. She's an American and victim of bad people doing bad things.

My theory is that Muslims follow Islam and Islamic history is steeped in victimhood when it is weaker and aggression/savagery when stronger. The former part appeals to women because women also play victim all the time and like to support other "victims". The latter part appeals to some women as it shows Muslim men to be brave, courageous and like real daredevil men from the novels.
So when Mohammed claims to be discriminated against "for being a Muslim", this resonates with do-gooder women who want to change the world and make it a better place. So Jennifer has no problem supporting his cause and fighting for him against the evil Steve and Peter.
