First, the Brits and Spain denied use of bases that are under a shared agreement, and now you've got countries closing off their airspace to military aircraft.

Is this the final straw and death knell in this albatross that this 'alliance' has become? What good are these alliances if they block us when it is time to step up or shut up?

Is the joke of the UN next on the chopping block?

I actually hope so

Doesn't serve much of a purpose anymore. Not for us, anyway

We should have evicted the UN decades ago

What benefit does NATO bring the US? Seems to me we bear all the risk and responsibility. We don't need anyone's help defending our interests. It's helpful, but not necessary.

They just can't handle Trump who has absolutely run roughshod over all of these once-strong countries, and rightly and loudly called them out for their self destruction. Never should another drop of American blood be shed for them.

Both the UN and NATO should be dumped since they outwardly work against our interests.

I just wonder how much fake money the next Dem/Commie president is going to give everyone to put it all back together.
I don't think you know me.

Nope.

NATO is still useful. I would like to see our allies supporting whats happening with Iran, but I don't believe the NATO charter requires it.

The UN is useless.

But I wonder, if it dies, how long before the Moors overtake all of Europe?

I think we should move all of our bases in Spain to NATO countries that are more friendly to the US, like Poland.

Stay in NATO, but let them know that if they are attacked, we DON'T have provide any soldiers or materiel to help them even if Article 5 is invoked - we just have to provide support.

But, being the good NATO ally we are, we'll allow them to stage aircraft out of US bases in the midwest and even fly in our airspace, but, not over the east coast, they have to fly south and go across the Gulf of America...

We can hope, as it's an abysmal failure as Ike long ago prognosticated.

Well, having the bases forward staged like they are can be a great strategic asset.

But, not if those countries block our military from acting.

There are a number of countries in NATO that would welcome a US base or two.

And the funny thing is, most of those countries are even closer to Russia than where our bases are now.

Reminder: we spent all of January talking about how we were going to invade Greenland. We spent all of February going on military adventurism without consulting our allies despite potential consequences to them. We spent all of March whining about them not helping a situation they were completely left out of. We are the bad ally. Anybody above the age of 5 should be able to see that.

One is the benefit of close friendships. Not just militarily, but also when it comes to issues of statesmanship and economic trade.

We've already seen some of our usual partners become frustrated with us and turn to China and other countries for support/trade. Trump has just threatened them even more.

Is a country any different than an individual. Is it smart to piss off all your friends??

Ever wonder why English is the official language of business, the US dollars the currency, or why the US has more bases across the world than China and Russia combined. Yeah………that's gonna change on our present path.?

Let's see: we more or less turned our backs on them as far as Ukraine/Russia. We just lit their economies on fire with a war they didn't want. We are publicly coercing them into joining said war. We lifted Russian oil sanctions to try to assuage the economic consequences of the war, which only helps Russia in their fight against Ukraine/Europe.

Can't understand why they'd be upset.

Hope so. NATO and the UN are both nothing more than extremely expensive parasites at this point.

Yup. And Germany has stepped up to the plate in Ukraine assistance

We are the best ally Europeans could ever hope to have. We've sorted out their messes at massive cost in $$ and lives. We're the reason they don't all speak German or Russian. We helped them recover after WW2 and protected them from Soviet invasion until 1990. They have been able to fund massive cradle to grave welfare programs because we protect them. You had an awful take.

A very low bar when it is less than 1/10 of ours and over half of Germany's spending is probably pensions (ours is getting there as well)

NATO was created in 1949 to counter the Soviet Union (USSR) and the Warsaw PACT!

Both the Soviet Union and Warsaw PACT dissolved in 1991.

It is time for us to walk away from NATO!

Stole this from somewhere, but it's fitting.

This whole situation is like watching a 3YO and a 5YO stacking blocks together, and then the 3YO just knocks them all down for the hell of it. The 5YO gets up and walks away, and the 3YO throws a fit and yelling at the 5YO for not helping him restack the blocks.

It's a matter of if, nor when that Western Europe devolves into 3rd world Islamofascist hellholes.

At that point there's no alliance, just a new bunch of crazies with nukes.

I seem to recall several NATO countries laughing at the US and hitching their energy needs and infrastructure onto the Russian wagon.

They brought their exposure to their own doorstep with the Ukraine/Russia conflict.

Indeed they did. Reagan warned them about that stupidity back in the 80s. The 80s! When OPEC induced oil crises were barely in the rear view mirror!

Stupid.

Yep it died when Europe quit contributing their agreed quotas of military contributions. Most are still under 2% of GDP They've been leeching off of us for several decades.

Europe killed NATO not us. And yes it was needed but at the end of the day Europe went socialist withered their economies and spirit. That place is a useless husk these days.
