These are the kinds of things I love showing my kids. They have to do a bit of public speaking, networking with peers. I understand exactly what he meant and his intent. It was very clear to me. But the words he used to convey it will not make that intent clear to most. Words matter. Phrasing matters. Preparation matters. Knowing your target audience definitely matters. Before any of us send a business or important email, there is at least two sets of eyes on it so that it doesn't come across as Mr. Newsom's bobbled commentary. Just assume everyone receiving your message has the IQ of an eggplant and you'll be much better off.
Reading the posts on this thread and how people "took" the commentary is proof that not everyone is smart enough to glean your point when you garble the message.
That was tough to watch.
Please explain to me like I'm a black man in his audience what he meant.
It's pretty clear to me what he was doing was to try and create an emotional link with your audience by trying to find common ground. Very standard speaking technique.
In his mind the common ground that clicked in his racist mind is black audience = lower IQ, so he went with hey I'm stupid and struggle with reading just like all of you.
But what do I know, I'm just a professional speaker for 25 years. So please explain to me like I'm stupid what message he garbled.
You're a "professional speaker" for TWENTY FIVE YEARS and you need me to explain how to know your audience and how mirroring and intending X but using the wrong words and analogies can mean Y to them? Yikes.
I feel like you understood the point and just need to hear yourself say it out loud. Read over your post again and process what you typed and save me the trouble of wording it differently for a third time.
Draw on that extensive 25 years of experience. If you understand the technique, and yet still arrive at "he thinks black people are dumb" then that's just intentionally obtuse. I'm not re-explaining something you clearly already understand but are being willfully ignorant over for the sake or argument.
"Mirroring"? Now you're just making up stuff.
This is what happened: he assessed his audience and concluded that they are lower intelligence and struggle with academics and reading, just like he does. His goal was to connect with them by sharing the fact that he is lower intelligence and struggles to read.
It would be like going into a football locker room full of 3rd stringers and saying "hey, I'm like you. I ran a 10 second 40. My vertical is like 8 inches", in an attempt to emotionally bond with them. It's not hard.
